I’ve had them for about two weeks and during my run today I noticed that the bottom cushions are starting to fall off!!! I kinda wanted to wear them this weekend in Lubbock? What to do???
There are two types of contact cement commonly used in attaching soles to shoes by a shoe repair shop: Masters and Barge. You can buy a small tube of Barge here → http://www.onestopcandle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=LE251001&Category_Code=LCEM
Or search online for somewhere else. It used to be carried by REI.
Clean the two surfaces well, make sure they are dry (blow dry if necessary), and cement. If done properly, it should last for the lifetime of the shoe. So you could do this to get these shoes through Lubbock, and then return them or continue using them.
Note that if you are not comfortable doing the repair yourself, you can take them to a shoe repair store and have them do it. Having the work done will probably cost less than mail ordering the glue, and paying for the glue and shipping. Thinking about it, having a shoe repair store do the work is probably the best option. Just make sure to get at least one run in them so you are confident the repair was done correctly. Note though, that the glue DOES TAKE 24 HOURS to cure. Do not use them before 24 hours, of the glue bond will fail.
(I have used this glue a lot, so I know that if you only wait a few hours, it will not hold.)

If I paid $150 for shoes and they fell apart in 2 weeks, you can bet they’d be going back! No way I’d be messing wtih glue, they should last MUCH longer than that! (obviously)
I agree. They WILL go back next week. I am going to try the glue idea first. I put my old shoes on and they feel totally different!!!
I’d still contact Newton about it. You may be voiding any warranty in gluing the shoes…
I just got off the phone with someone at Newton. They suggested the rubber cement to get me through the weekend and then I could mail them back!!! Nice customer support.
Just to be clear, “rubber cement” and contact cement like I mentioned above are entirely different. Rubber cement is what elementary school students often use to make paper projects stick together, and it will not hold the shoes together. Good contact cement is used to adhere outsoles to midsoles, as well as to adhere laminate flooring and other high stress parts.
I just wanted to make sure you understood the difference, because I don’t want to pass someone at Lubbock this weekend standing on the side of the road, with pieces of shoes in their hands, YELLING “WHERE IS THAT PAUL DUNN! GIVE ME YOUR SHOES PAUL DUNN!” ![]()
See you there, and good luck!
Paul
Defective. Call them and ask for a return label and the ywill get another out to you.
Do not try to repair them yourself.
Let us know about your cust service experience.
Which model did you get, btw?
Got it, contact cement!!!
If you are flying past me on the run is it ok to ask for your legs:))))))))
What wave are you in?
I’m in wave 6, M40-44. How about you?
Paul
Those things were deathtraps!!! Was that picture taken after one Minnesota Winter?
First one. F40-44. When are you going to Lubbock?
most shoe repair places are used to repairing dress shoes and will likely screw up your running shoes. the kind of glue used on running shoes is usually a more exotic heat or UV activated urethane adhesive. if you use the wrong kind of glue you will make them unrepairable due to contamination. Many of these glues have an activation temperature of 140F so if you left them in your car in the sun you could have cooked the glue or it could be a bad batch. I would just return them. They probably aren’t the only pair falling apart if others from the same batch have bad glue. I spent several years repairing outdoor footwear and most of the stuff we declined to work on were shoes people had tried to fix themselves.

I was successfully using Shoe Goo for many years to repair worn or falling off bottoms of my New Balance and Nike shoes:

Shoe Goo comes in clear and black. You may try to find this stuff in sport stores like Modell’s or Foot Locker. I recently used Shoe Goo on worn bottoms of my New Balance 2001 after they hit 1K miles mark. I tried conact cement and other glues, but Shoe Goo worked the best for me.
I would strongly suggest returning them. Not only you’ll get a new replacement, you’d also help them address any manufacturing/design flaws in advance and help future designs.
I own a pair and have had good luck so far.
I agree with the other guy, don’t glue it! Order a new pair on your credit card, have them fed ex them to you at no additional cost. When you return your pair back to them then they can credit your card back for your purchase. If you choose not to send your defective pair back then they are not out any money.
You don’t want to go into the race thinking about your shoes and they don’t want the bad PR!
Well maybe I expect too much, but nothing short of overnighting a new pair to you would be considered good service. All they did was say ‘yeah, go ahead a glue them… we’re gonna throw them away anyway’. They haven’t really done anything to help you. Going into a HIM with busted shoes is a distraction/concern you shouldn’t have to worry about.
They could simply have you email a pic of them to confirm that they’re toast.
If they want to build loyalty, this was an easy opportunity for them to turn a negative into a positive. but again, maybe I expect too much.
I’m not sure I would “expect” that kind of service, but it sure would be nice!
I agree it would be a little above and beyond, but if I were trying to grow a product or brand, the last thing I would want is someone walking around in a pair of two week old busted shoes. The $$ they would risk by sending new ones out ahead of time would offset the potential negative consequences. ![]()
Nope.
Have had mine now for 2 months.
Still great, and just discovered that they are the most comfortable shoes to race in without socks I’ve owned. The uppers are what really appeal to me. Should be interesting what the new Zoot shoes will be like.
