It’s been awfully quiet on the Tyler news…anyone have an update?
I’m waiting myself. Kind of wondering how long it’s going to be! It could be well into the Winter before we hear anything solid. That’s just my guess.
…part of me thinks that the longer he’s silent, the more likely they’re brewing up a story or looking for some sort of legal loophole. I don’t want it to be true, but I’m loosing faith.
If that were me - I’d be doing everything in my power to assure my fans, and the cycling community, that I’m clean and it’ll just be a matter of time…not hiding behind a legal team and a new ‘scientific board’…
Though - it’s highly unlikely I’ll be accused of doping with some of my run splits at Ironman…
Assuming he is clean, its going to be a long time before something happens. First he has to find out why he tested positive. My feeling is that it has to be something physiologically odd about his blood. If this is the case he A) Has to find out what it is. B) Prove to himself that the odd factors will show up as positive and C) Then convince the Anti Doping powerw of this.
A and B might be easy enough, but probably will take at least a month or more. C is very difficult. The people involved aren’t likely to take Tylers word for it, nor any test results he bought and paid for. So that means he has to get them to agree to make him a research project. He can’t simply keep giving them his blood for testing, WADA will keep saying your still doping. What can he do? Live in a sealed room for six months then take the test to prove he hasn’t had a transfusion.
Don’t be surprised if Tyler publishes reams of testing proving he has “unusual” blood, but is still banned for two years.

According to this article in a German paper http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,321317,00.html he abnd Phonak are gonna fight the ban.
Hello,
I started my post with “assuming that Tyler…”, I don’t know that Tyler blood doped and you don’t know. We both have our opinions.
I think that if he is a “chimera” or some other condition he may not of known before this. As I understand, this is a rare condition which only shows up in fairly exotic blood tests. He has certainly been tested for other types of blood boosting, but the test that “caught” him is new.
I have yet to here Tyler pt forward a plausable explanation for why he would be innocent or hear WADA put forward an explanation which states that their test wouldn’t give a false positive for a chimera.
At this point, as I understand things we wait for for Tyler to come up with a documented explanation and for WADA to rebut it. Until then he is and should be suspended. Hopefully, this will be cleared up before the season starts.

According to inside sources, Tyler is a Chimera. He, and his fused twin Kuato (pictured below), will be holding a joint question/answer session at Interbike tomorrow… ![]()

That looks like the “Appendage” from my favorite X-Files episode. The one with the Human Block-head and the Conundrum.
I think the issue is that this is a new test that the UCI started this year… It would be intersting if there was an old sample of his blood he was willing to have tested…
I don’t think you can use old blood. Even if stored properly, the RBC’s last only about 180 days. I read that in one of the articles, but I am not a doctor, so maybe I misread or am wrong…
It is amazing how easy it is to pack on the weight after your last race!
It always surpises me the number of elite athletes in all sorts of sports that turn out to have add medical conditions that allow them to use what would normally be banned substances or that as in Tylers example they find some weird medical condition to explain a positive result.
If you take the elites as a sample of the general population then you could assume that there are a whole lot more people out there with all sorts of weird and wonderful conditions that they don’t know about or I accept that don’t affect them because of their different lifestyle. I just find it hard to swallow though…
I’m a Tyler fan, last years tour just cemented that, but now i’m not so sure I want to be.
If Tyler is a genetic chimera it would be relatively straightforward to demonstrate this. I have to say though that 'd be surprised if he is even tested. I suspect that what he and Phonak will do will be to fight the test on the grounds that it is new and not trustworthy and look for an OJ-like legal loophole.
Yes, I’m a cynic, but who knows, maybe I’ll be surprised.
Again I never said whether I believe Tyler doped or not. I frankly don’t know. He tested positive and as such it is up to him to prove why he could test positive and not have doped. Until he does he should be suspended. You assert that their is no way he could be innocent of doping.
I am not so positive. I haven’t yet heard a qualified (expert in the field of hematology, not an MD) docter speak to the issue either way. The questions I would like answered are:
Is it possible that Tyler (being an adult male without a twin) is a “chimera”?
If so would he test positive because of this condition with the test he was given?
Finally, "Are their any rare blood conditions that a healthy adult male could have which would give a false positive?
If you have a link where these have been covered I would be interested.

but then I’d like to know with all his accidents before, how come no one ever realized some results were odd.
I don’t think it ever would have been tested - the flow cytometric tests done are not routine for someone like Tyler.
Like if he was a chimera? Really hard to say… we dont know what percentage of his RBCs were abnormal. If that percentage were small and if he were a chimera then I doubt it would have ever come up before.
Is this from total recall?
Yup…
