Any Mac people get Golden Cheetah realtime with Computrainer?

I would like to be able to do realtime data through Golden Cheetah on my MacBook running Lion while I’m riding the Computrainer. I can’t get the computer to recognize the computrainer successfully though. I’ve attempted to update the driver software for that RS232 USB cable that has a FTDI chip in it. I’ve tried to alter something about “root” and “wheel” in the terminal. I’m really not certain that I’m typing in the proper device port when I set up GC but have tried many names. Part of the time it will tell me it can’t find the computrainer but other times it doesn’t have that popup warning so I assume that when there is no warning I must have done at least something right in the device setup. It’s as if it can find the computrainer but won’t pull data from it into the program. At one point the Computrainer controller said “ePro” on it, so I don’t know what’s up with that.

I’ve attempted all the information from this page:
http://bugs.goldencheetah.org/projects/goldencheetah/wiki/Realtime_set_up

In the end I’ve still got no data coming into Golden Cheetah version 2 or 3. Anyone have any success with this on a Mac?

Yes, I have this working on a MBP with Lion. What it took for me was to get the exact triplight USB to serial adapter and to update the drivers from the triplet webpage. Once this was done it worked perfectly. It is awesome to use the CT natively on the MAC. The best part is some wicked smart guy has linked all of the sufferfest videos to erg files. Totally awesome. It took me an afternoon to figure it all out but it just plain worked when I gave up on the usb to serial connector that racer mate suggested. If you have any other questions drop me a line.

I am running GC 3.0, on Win, using CT in realtime and can load up a .eg file. What I can’t figure out is how to also get the video window to show up so I can run the video and .erg at same time. I see the video listed on the left below the .erg but clicking on it does nothing and I don’t see where I can add a video window to the screen.

If you are using the very very very latest build (from Monday) from goldencheetah.stand2surf.net then there is an add chart button on the tooolbar to the right … click that and select video window.

If its a bit older, then open up the charts list on the left and drag and drop the video window item onto the page. I know, its not intuitive – thats why we replaced it with a menu option

If you’re running Windows XP we have an issue with the video player that we are deubugging … literally right now… so it doesn’t work. It does work on Win7 tho.

Is it the new FTDI cable with a stereo jack? if so, it should work, but only with v2.1 or v3 (we fixed a bug that was in v2).

If its older, then its not so great. if you can get hold of a keyspan they work great with a Mac.

Yes, it is the newer FTDI cable with stereo jack. I’ve tried version 2.1 and 3 with no success. I thought that maybe the driver was modified on the computrainer install discs for windows since the standard FTDI driver download I did was unsuccessful. I may have to go the route of the keyspan. Thanks.

OK. I must confess I know that users use it successfully on Windows, but checked up and no-one has reported using it on a Mac.

I spent some time with the newer adaptor and GoldenCheetah on my MBP last night and found there is a bug.

The good news is the bug has been fixed – so you will not have to buy a Keyspan.

When the new development builds are published I will let you know and that should resolve the issue. But you will need to install the FTDI drivers – will provide details in the next update.

Just wanted to stop you pulling the trigger on spending any money on a new adaptor.

Mark

Just a quick note to mention that the latest development build for GoldenCheetah v3 is now available from http://goldencheetah.stand2surf.net/

This will work with the FTDI cable that ships with newer Computrainers. You will need to install the FTDI drivers from here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

I have it working flawlessly on Lion with the newer cable.

Mark,

Just wanted to say thanks for checking into this and looking out for my best interest in not buying a cable!
