Any inside info on the CaliforniaMan swim venue?

Just got this from a friend who is a Mad Cow…

To all those that dare to tri,

On Sunday we will ride the Caliman Half bike course for those interested in previewing the first loop of this bike course for the Californiaman.

Several members of the Sac Tri Club have expressed interest in doing a Caliman brick every Sunday with the Mad Cows until the actual race…the swim is set to start at the Port of Sacramento at this time. There is a slight possibility that the swim could still be started at Lake Alhambra with T1 at Harper Jr High, however, this depends on the outcome of a meeting between the City of Davis and the Lake Alhambra board. The final decision will be known tomorrow.

The bike course will go from the Port across the causeway bike path onto Chiles road, left onto Mace Blvd. turning right onto Tremont and going out a very familiar route for those of us that have gone out that way before across the bridge down Seivers…right onto the famed Stevenson’s Bridge road…turning left onto Putah Creek and going around Lake Solano coming back into Davis via Putah Creek; Stevenson’s Bridge and Russell Blvd to A street…the T1 transition area will be at the civic center park and from the Port this is exactly a 55.9 mile route. For those that would like to know the second loop of the Californiaman will head towards Esparto turning right off of road 95 and going into the small rolling hills…this will surely keep the IM distance riders from getting bored with the same flat route.

We will meet at the Nugget Store on Mace Blvd at 8am.

So, if you are up for about a 47 mile ride(it is 9 miles from the port to Mace blvd.) and then a 6 mile run(bring your running shoes) out and back so no one gets lost or whatever you would like to do…we all thought we would get some grub afterwards and start a Sunday Californiaman tradition probably at Cantina Del Cabo since they have some of the very best grub in town.

Please come out and join us…all levels welcome… we will regroup as needed and if you get dropped don’t worry we’ll catch you back up…Mad Cows route rule…ride with pride and don’t divide…no matter how fast you think you are someone is always faster, usually smarter and more often than not better looking!

John:

Can you provide more info. on the potential swim venues (Alhambra v. Port of Sacramento)- type of body of water, clarity, cleanliness, tempurature, etc. The last swim venue posted by J&A (the waterski “lake”) looked bad. I am seriously considering this race, but want to know where we will be swimming first. Any insight would be great.

River City Rowing practices at the Port of Sacramento, there are some pictures at their website that might give you a sense of the place:

I would imagine that any swim would have to acces the water at or near the docks you see in the above pictures. As for a body of water, the port should provide a large, uncrowded swim with easy sight lines. Clarity will be negligible; cleanliness should be fine As a transition area, it won’t be much worse than T1 at Vineman. The “parking lot” at the port that I am familiar with is just a vast expanse of gravel. Hopefully J&A will make liberal use of carpet remnants when creating T1 and the paths too and from T1.

The bike course from the port would be even flatter than before; I picture a massive paceline forming on the causeway (you can only really ride two abreast on this stretch anyway, and the average triathlete cylist may not even be able to do this safely) with no opportunity to break up. J&A should have a couple of marshalls in the stretch of road after the causeway to hand out drafting penalties.

I have no clue what Lake Alhambra is like. I think that it is a “residential lake” in a community in Davis. Some have swum in recently to try it out and seem content with it. I do not know how it is supplied with water such that it is “swimable” at the end of summer.

Just read this thread and decided to chime in with some really good information.

**The Port of Sacramento **will be the swim venue for the Californiaman triathlon.

Swim finish…sand…no gravel…whew…and no mud either

Transition 1 pavement…no gravel (just so you know - should be a good swim/T1)

The bike course will go across the causeway bike path(sweeped day before) with a strict no pass rule to ensure that no one gets injured. The bike path will end and riders will travel onto Chiles Rd. with a complete road closure for the entire bike course.

The swim venue, new bike course and run course will be posted to the J&A Productions website this next week.

I will make sure to post the press release to this forum as soon as it goes out.

Also, for those looking to accomplish an Ironman distance event this year…the Californiaman bike course will not be a boring double loop…it will feature a second 56 mile course up through Yolo County…utilizing some very nice small rolling hills up towards a little town called Esparto…so the course is a good one for first time IM finishers as the bike is very fast and flat…with the wind and heat it will make for a real Kona like experience! Bring your sunscreen!

Also, if you would like to preview part of the swim venue…the new sprint distance West Sacramento Triathlon is July 31st which will feature a .75 mile swim at the Port of Sac…so if your not doing the Half Vineman…check it out. www.updogsports.com

Hope this helps with your decision to race Larry…the water at the port was great today. We’re going to try and set up swim opportunities at the swim start site with bouys in place…I’ll let you know when this is in place.

Watch the Mad Cows Racing Team website www.madcowsracing.org for more course training opportunities…swim, bike and run.

Swam there in a race many moons ago…much better choice than what was going to be the swim venue, IMO…

Thanks for confirming, Mary.

That appears to be large upgrade from the pictures shown of the last proposed venue. Nice going!

The causeway bike path no pass zone is less than 2 miles…I will get the exact measurement.

T1 is exactly 11 miles from T2 by bike and exactly 10 miles by freeway…this makes the triathlon a point to point race, however, for this swim I would say that it is worth the 2 transitions. You can still bike out to the port race day if you want to…however I would say that driving would be my preferred choice.

Hope that everyone will promote this awesome race now that the swim is set.

Have a great Memorial Day,

Mary

FWIW I did the CaliMan 1/2 last year and I didn’t find the two transition areas to be problem. The shuttle service back to the start was easy and efficient too. Two transitions is not something I would be worried about this year.

I did the race last year, and the 2 transistions was not the perfect way to go, but, if the vineman can do it also,

it is okay.
