Hello all. I’ve been a lurker for a month or so, and decided to come out of the closet. I’m thinking about lacing up a PowerTap to a Jet 40 rim. It seems like a good rim. I want a wheel that I can train on, ride a mountainous century, ride 112 in my first IM, etc. I know it is tough to find one wheel that is best for all situations. What do you think about this idea? Anybody have any experience with this rim. I currently have a set of Bontrager race lit wheels on a Trek 2300. At 46yo and 175#, I’m pretty much an aspiring BOP rider. Average speed on last year’s Half IM at Great Floridian was 16mph. So, I don’t need any real high end equipment. I’ll save that money to buy a tri bike when I get a little faster. Thanks for any help and info!
The rain issue doesn’t bother me much. I don’t go out in a rain. I get caught in one occasionally. Never know what raceday will bring though. I’ll always have my stock wheel if I must ride in a rain. I live in south Georgia and its pretty flat here. Just do limited mountain riding. If you could recommend a deep V, what would it be? Thanks
I ride with a guy sometimes that uses them for all his training rides. He’s a big(180-210, depending on the time of year) and fast(Kona Q’fier, 19th O’all at an IM last year) guy. He does 100-170 mile rides on them all the time, including climbing rides. He says they have stayed straight and true. The guy at www.wheelbuilder.com has great things to say about them.
Thanks for the info. Actually the builder you guys are talking about is the one I’ve been talking to. He recommended the Jet 40 as an option, a Mavic CPX33 or Velocity, and the the Zipps. The Jets fit in the budget. He didn’t mention the Jet 60 or Jet 90 and I’m going to ask about those when I place the order. I was hoping for some real riding experience/advice before I bought. Other than to save some $, I don’t see a big advantage to a deep v rim over the Jets. So, I’m leaning toward the Jets. The Hed info on their site is interesting regarding the aero qualities of the various wheels. Thanks for the info!!
I have a Jet as my front wheel and I have never had any problems with rain inside (and I’ve raced on some pretty wet days). I have an older model with the 60mm rim depth and think it is a great wheel.
Thanks for the input guys. I’m going to order it and see for myself!
