The IN-Laws just booked a trip for next May to Hilton Head. Is it a good area to ride? Don’t want to take along my bike for no reason. I would like to have an excuse to get away for a couple of hours every day or so. ![]()
There’s actually a Tri shop on the island. Get in touch with Alfred at Go Tri Sports and he’ll set you up with some routes.
Thanks a bunch!
Be careful - I almost got a ticket this past summer. The community we were staying in (Sea Pines) requires you to ride of the bike paths (if you haven’t been to HH before, there are miles and miles and miles of bike paths). Well, the only problem with me riding on the bike paths is that I’m averaging around 16 or 18 MPH while the beach cruiser bikes are going 5 or 6 MPH. I chose to ride on the road and that was a no-no according to the cop that stopped me.
I don’t know if it still in effect or not, but I remember reading about 10 years ago hat SC was one of the few states to still have laws in effect that if there is a bike path, then you can not rode on the road. So it is a state law and not just a Sea Pines rule. That being said, I have lived here most of my life an this is the first time I have heard of it being enforced. Hilton Head has over 100 miles of bike paths and the beach is very hard packed and is good for riding. But most of the trails are too winding and haev to many road crossing to really stay up at speeed. I am not sure what the traffic is like in May, but when we go in Novemeber of each year, I look at it as a good cross training opportunity and get in several good rides on the mountain bike. You can keep up 20+ mph on the beach with no problems unless there are a lot of people or high tide. I would email Al at Go Tri Sports before you go and see what kind of road riding there is.
Mate I live in hhi and we have plenty of rides.Tues and thurs out of the bike doctor located on matthews drive @ 6 pm
and sunday from go tri sports leaving @8am some leave earlier and pick up at 8.shot pm if you need more
.
Unless it has changed in the last ten years, the SC law states that, unless the “bike paths” are dedicated strictly to bibycles, it is legal for cyclist to use the highways. They should never call these paths “bike paths”, they’re “trans-paths” or “rec-paths”, etc. That’s what confused the cops and caused all the problem. Sea Pines Plantation is another story…I think they seceded from SC.
