Any Dr's out there? I've got a flu/recovery question!

I’m on my 24 week plan for IMCDA (currently on week 5), and got a severe case of the Flu two weeks ago followed by upper resp infection. I still feel super sluggish, can only do about 3/4 of the prescribed workouts and have bad fatigue. I also ran the Houston Marathon the Sunday before I got the flu, so my question is…Am I experiencing post race fatigue, lingering Flu effects or am I still sick? I still have some ‘stuff’ in my lungs and can’t seem to breath as well as I need to. Any help/suggestions would be great. I’m still in base phase of my training, but feel like I’m falling miles behind.

I am no Dr. but sounds like you still have something - you may want to go back to the Dr. and get checked out… I am not a big fan of antibiotics but maybe you need some?

Thanks, I’m actually on my second round of antibiotics. I’m not a big fan either, but I need to get this thing knocked out so I can get back to some productive training. Right now I’m just “slowing the bleeding” of my fitness.

Could just be post-viral bronchitis (I get it for up to 8 weeks after I get a cold because of my asthma), but not a bad idea to get it rechecked out.

good advice from others to get checked out, also keep in mind that abx may make you feel sluggish in training, not sure why they just seem to for me

You need to stop working out at all - you’re just prolonging your illness and putting yourself at risk for serious problems.

When you are sick - you rest until you feel 90% better - then you go for a 10 minute walk or easy jog or 10 min easy spin. If you still feel better the next day after that - you VERY SLOWLY increase duration until you feel 100% better. Then you can bump it up. You also only bump up if you feel better after the easy work-out than before.

You have time - be patient - don’t stress about missed work-outs - you’ll just try to compensate - over-train and get sick again and again.

Often illness is a clue that you are doing something wrong - i.e. overtraining/not enough sleep/not enough recovery/too much stress…

As an MD I strongly agree. If you came to my office i would offer the same advice. You can’t rush recovery, but you sure can prolong it.
Enjoy some guilt free down time, your body is asking for it.

antibiotics won’t fix the flu =)

Stop being such a triathlete. You just did the marathon. Take some complete time off now. 24 weeks is plenty of time. Yes, you are still experiencing post marathon fatigue, lingering flu effects, and you are still sick.

Thanks I’m aware that Antibiotics won’t fix the flu. I’ve had a bacterial respiratory infection on top of that. I’ve been resting and finally started to feel normal yesterday. Went on a ride and had pretty decent experience. Hopefully on on a short road to recovery. Thanks for all the help.
