I bought a HED3 front on the ST classifieds last year and have been very pleased with it. Now trying to figure out what to do about a rear wheel for next season (planning ahead, and hoping I can afford a used one by then). There is a part of me that would like to match the front and run the tri-spokes front and rear, but what if any are the drawbacks to a HED3 rear? My other thought was something like a HED jet 60 or a flashpoint. I’m was thinking an 80 or 90mm depth might be too much, as I would like something I could use for all of my events, some of which are pancake flat, but some are really hilly. Any thoughts?
There is an H3 Deep that is 90mm. You could try that.
there is no triathlon for which an H3 wouldn’t make a great rear wheel
and no triathlon for which a disc wouldn’t be even a little better
=)
.
No powertap.
Im not too curious about the rear but I am interested in the tri spoke vs. deep dish on the front wheel. Watching the races its a mix and no adherence to one way or the other. Whats the advantage? Im curious because Im going to be investing in a wheelset soon with a disc of some sort in the rear and something in the front
I agree, great wheel… I’d say go as deep-dish as you can, with a disc if your race and budget will allow it.
the h3 has less drag at higher yaw angles than the deep dish wheels
the deep dish wheels have less drag at medium yaw angles than the h3
if you are doing a longer, slower event, the H3 might be quicker.

It doesnt make the cool sound of a disc
.
No real drawback to an H3. Actually it is lighter than a disc and therefore may have an advantage if you want to use the same wheel for all of your races.
I ride with a HED3 front and back. The only negative is you can’t get use a powertap. Otherwise, very nice set up!
That’s true, maybe if it’s a mostly uphill course with some flats the tri-spoke might be a better option? Otherwise on a flat and / or in an Olympic or less (distance) I’d say the disk is the way to go.
And yes, they have that cool sound. Makes the slower guys in front of you get out of the way when they hear you coming!

With the emphasis on “a little” as in very little, right?
I’ve got a H3 front, and a H3 deep and Jet Disc for rear - if forced to choose between the two rear I’d go for the disc as the H# deep will really only be for a race with high wind or with a no disc rule. The good thing about the H3 is that it’s a wheel for life…
So do the new discs make the same sound? Since as I understand it they are not the solid foam sandwich that the earlier designs were?

yeah

I used my JEt disc for the first time Sunday in a 40k TT. Doesn’t make that cool disc sound that I can remember.
Rode great, one big bump you could here the carbon sheets rattle, sounded like a pinch flat at first. But other then that 1.99 thumbs up.
My 808/disc cover did make that sound though.
I’ve used that H3 ever since it was invented for most of my racing, and it is a great wheel for most all conditions and courses. ANd I disagree with Jack about the disc comparison. I have riden many courses where the disc would have been slower. Treasure Island for one, and a duathlon nationals I did where it was a 4 mile loop, 11 turns every loop for 6 laps. I went from around 19th after the first run to 2nd off the bike because of the cornerning advantage of the H3 over a disc. I know it has been debated over and over here if a disc is really stiffer, and thus more prone to slippage on tight corners, but there is no debate to the way they handle in my riding. It may be something different, but a disc slips before a H3 when you are pushing corners to their limits. And for me, it just takes a few turns in a race for me to get back any advantage that the disc may have had in the straights, and I hate the heavy crosswind corrections you have to make with a disc…\
So for all round performance, I vote H3 if you only get one wheel…
Yeah no cool/annoying sound from the Jet, but possibly easier on the legs leaving you fresher for the run than other discs (can’t measure that in a wind tunnel). Also with nimble fingers you can mount the magnet on the spokes to keep you even more aero…
Ah so there are spokes in there, which I assume adjust from the tire bed. So you can reach one from the valve cut out I assume?

With the H3 front you can put the magnet into the valve hole … you can’t be more aero than that!
