I used this one about a decade ago, and it was great. There are only two companies that are approved by the Navajo Nation, Ken’s (mine) and Dixie’s (yours above, but you can go direct to their website)
Antelope is a total tourist trap, and in the same breath, if you don’t have the opportunity to (safely) go explore the desert on your own, then it’s probably the best option. The desert landscapes and geology are otherworldly!
I did a guided backpack last year in Paria Canyon. We had two days prior for sight seeing.
Asked our guide if Antelope canyon would be good- she told us it would be a total zoo. We went to Snow canyon near St George- very beautiful and not crowded. We could not even get in Zion the day we drove up there- big disappointment.
PAria Canyon was beyond awesome- 4 nights and five days threre.
Went last year while staying at Sand Hollow so a bit of a drive to Page, Az. That being said it was well worth the trip and we really enjoyed it. Tour guide makes all the difference. Afterwards we went down to the lake on the reservation and had lunch at a marina. Yes tourist trip but well worth it.
We do have several days in the area, so open to exploring other things nearby. However, we are camping at Grand Canyon NP, so this will be a day trip over to Page area.
I think I’d like to go see Horseshoe Bend as well, though my husband insists it is also a tourist trap.
We did a couple slot canyons in Utah in 2024, private tour and unguided. Interestingly enough, I’ve also been in the largest slot canyon in Tennessee (300’ length, not all that exciting compared to out West, but still pretty cool).
We went a few years ago. I thought it was fantastic. I’m not sure what people mean by it being a tourist trap. It is on private land, so you have to pay, and rightly so. There is a gift shop and such, but you don’t have to hang out there if you don’t want to. The Canyon itself is quite spectacular.
We didn’t go, but we’re told the Upper Antelope Canyon is even more amazing. Still on private land, and you have to take a 4x4 to get to it, but there are fewer people.
Horseshoe Bend is nice to see, but isn’t that big a deal. Short walk in from parking, maybe 20 minutes, and the viewing area is only so big.
Yes midday is the best because there are shafts of light that shine through openings in the roof. Very cool effect. I would recommend the upper which we went to vs the lower which friends went to both. There were some pretty cool native arts tables there as well selling items. Wife bought a ring.
Enjoy your trip, I love the desert down there.
