Another tragedy

Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Bicyclist killed in Dana Point I-5 southbound onramp at Pacific Coast Highway reopens following early-morning collision. By SALVADOR HERNANDEZ The Orange County Register
*DANA POINT – A bicyclist was killed in a traffic collision today, authorities said. *
*The accident occurred at 5:07 a.m. near the Pacific Coast Highway onramp for the southbound I-5 freeway, California Highway Patrol officer Denise Quesada said. *
The onramp to the freeway was closed for nearly two hours and was not opened until 7:37 a.m.
The bicyclist, a 37-year-old male from Fremont who has not been identified, died at the scene.
He was struck by a red 1986 Mazda truck, Quesada said.
Deputies also removed a badly damaged yellow bicycle.
In Dana Point, traffic flowed normally where the Pacific Coast Highway, the I-5 and Camino Las Ramblas meet, with the exception of the temporarily closed onramp.
Signs at both ends of the road identify that stretch as being off-limits to both pedestrians and bicyclists.

I remember that stretch coming up from SD county.
Back then I did not continue riding on when I came onto that signage.
It looks like the victim was not familiar with the area either but decided to ride it anyway or he just did not pay attention to the signage.
It is too bad that the signage did/does not specifiy the alternatives cyclists have in this area.

Although I do not know why he was cycling there, this time the disregard of the rules of the road ended tragically…

Very sad. There was another one on Saturday at W. Laic and 395 in SD and was a member of the Pendleton Tri Team and there will be a memorial service/ride on Friday.

Seems Dana Point is a dangerous area, there’s been many cyclists runner killed there in the past two years.

Cathy,

The ride for Shawn is on Saturday, not Friday. His memorial service is on Friday. He is survived by his wife, Chris.

This hits very close to home for me…I don’t know Shawn, but know several people that ride with him and would have ridden with him on Saturday had I not decided to go to Baja at the last minute. This accident occurred on a very popular training route that I ride a lot.

Here are the details of the ride in his honor.

Option one – approx 40 Mile ride

Depart promptly at 9:00 AM from McGee Park (just
east of 101 & Beech Ave) in
Carlsbad.
This ride will be about 40 miles round trip. We’ll
ride north along the
coast to the bike path to River road to the Downs
and up W. Lilac.

Option two – about 15 Mile ride
Depart when Option One arrives, approximate 10:15 AM
from the Bonsall Church
at Camino Del Rey and Old River Road (just south of
Rt 76)

Please forward this on to anyone you think might
want know…

FYI: Though Shawn has passed, he continues to give
life to others, the
majority of his organs including his strong heart
were donated to save
lives… in lieu of flowers you can contribute in
Shawn’s name to Life
