Another ST'er being layed off

I was told yesterday that my job of 16 years is being consolodated so my last day here will be April 20th, with a severence package offered until Sept 21st.

Damn… At least I wasn’t given a box and shown the door.

President Obama is taking applications!

Also, sorry to hear about your lay-off. Good luck to you!

My brother used to work in a computer division in a big corporation. When you were being canned the security would enter your cubicle and turn off your computer with a key and then escort you out of the building. Your severence package would be then sent to you. They did it that way because employees started to sabatoge the system once they learned they were being canned. Fortunately my brother quit before that happened.

Sorry about your job lose, but think what a good summer you might have if you don’t work again until September. -)

& I can understand that…
While I am not trying to defend companies when they layoff people, I never understood why they would “allow” people to “stay” after there were canned (obviously there are some cases that are negotiated) for at least 2 reasons:
The feeling of “dead man walking” for the canned person.
The canned person will be @ most 50% productive. What is the point? He/She might as well stay @ home and truly focus on taking a break, looking for another job, etc.
@ Jamma:
All the best to find a new job. Do not be too complacent and do not wait the last “minute” to look for a job…

Fred.

Best of luck to you. As others have said, get to work looking for your next career stop. Seven plus months of financial security is nice. I was informed by phone two days after hip surgery that my last day was that week, here’s a couple of months severance, we’ll have someone bring your stuff to you, thanks for playing. Oh, and send back your laptop (fat chance: you come get it!).

I work in high-tech. When they are doing lay-offs, you are notified that your job is gone, and by the time you get back to your desk your access to the network is cut-off. You pack up and leave. Of course, your official last day is 2-4 weeks away. So, they give you notice but want nothing further to do with you in the interim. Severance kicks in after the official last day (if its lay-offs).

Wow. 16 years?

Good luck, and keep your chin up.

After working at a firm for 8 years and getting summarily laid off without a single penny of severance, I am jealous of you guys.

To the OP, good luck, hopefully this door closing means a better one is opening.

I feel your frustration, after 10 years I was also laid off no severance at all, just turn in your keys and leave at lunchtime not even paid for the full day. Then 3 mo into my unenployment claim they tried to claim I was fired and not laid off.

I think my checks run out right about then too. Best of luck!

Good luck to you. I was laaid off last february and didnt find a job until thanksgiving and started midway through dec. It was rough towards the end! The day I got hired I picked up a bottle of champagne and got wasted celebrating with the family!

Its detailed on here haha.

Dude. It’s time to leave that area anyway. Pick up and move your family somewhere else.

Sorry about the news. Make the best of the next 9 months.

Good luck, and make sure you think of it as an opportunity to find a better job.

.

Very sorry to hear this. I wish you well.

My first “real” job after moving to the US was in an IT Support dept and my second day on the job, a guy in a related group got let go. After what I assume was his firing talk, the VP of IT walked him back to his desk where he was allowed to gather his personal belongings before being escorted out of the building. Very awkward as the whole area was silent while all this happened.

Scared the shit out of me, I remember thinking “Bloody hell, these American companies don’t f**k about do they?”

I was let go with 3 hours notice. Had time to pack my stuff and say my goodbyes. I then got escorted out of the building. I got severance which was good and COBRA.

When I left SmithBarney a few years ago I thought I would cheat the leave immediately policy and decided to say goodbye to my coworkers about an hour or so before I officially gave notice. I got to about five or six folks before the branch manager saw me looking sheepish and ran me off.

Happily, he got sacked a few months later. I make it a practice never to wish bad things on people, this guy got what he deserved.

There was talk recently of a man who was off visiting his dad on his death bed. He was told he had to come in that day, but he refused. They said he had to at least be there in the am, and knowing that layoffs were impending, he didn’t want to risk his job. He came in and told that it was his last day. His father died while he was at work getting fired.

Who knows if the story is true…
