BRITISH Royal Marine snipers firing from a helicopter blasted out a speedboat’s engines in the Caribbean and seized £200 million ($474 million) worth of cocaine, a newspaper reported today.
The armour-piercing shots crippled all four outboard motors and allowed a Navy team from the frigate, HMS Cumberland, to arrest a gang of drug traffickers as they raced across the ocean in a speedboat, The Sun reported.
With a Lynx helicopter from her support ship, Cumberland intercepted the boat in international waters on Friday night about 100 miles off the coast of Nicaragua during a routine counter-drugs patrol, The Sun said.
The four-strong gang at first tried to outrun their pursuers.
However, they were forced to give themselves up after the snipers disabled the speedboat’s engines and the team from Cumberland boarded the vessel. They seized two tonnes of cocaine with a street value of about £ 200 million.
The operation was supported by the US Coastguard.
Do the British have jurisdiction in the Carribean, or is this operation under the international war on drugs? I am not against it I just dont see where they have the right to fire on a boat in international waters.
Drug efforts in the Carribean are part of a Combined Joint Task Force that includes, among others, British, Dutch and Americans. Generally, if a boat is flagged, you have to go through all kinds of channels to get permission to board and inspect, but if it’s an unflagged vessel, and it refuses to heave to for inspection, it’s not unusual to fire warning shots, and then disabling fire.
