I actually think Detroit has a good airport. Not sure why it’s ranked as bad. It’s very spread out but is very nice and modern. Plenty of food options too.

Compared to where? I’ve flown into SD and rented a car almost a dozen times, I don’t think it ranks below average. What don’t you like about it? The train tracks kind of mess things up a little on the return but other than that, its a short bus ride to/from the terminal, with very short shuttle wait times.
If the asshat had said ORD instead of MDW maybe, but since he didn’t it’s asshattery.
The winning airports are big fish in a small pond.
If you compare with airports like Singapore, they would all be way down the list.

I was almost late for a flight out of SD. Back before GPS was available, I was using a piece of paper provided by the rental agency. I missed the exit going in one direction and was looking for an exit for the same road in the other direction and it wasn’t there.

The few times I’ve gone to SD the Google Maps route to drop off the car is very long once you enter the airport it takes you through some pretty serious traffic if you hit it at the wrong time of day. This past April the bus back to the terminal took a good 20 minutes. Next time I fly out of SD I’ll allow an extra 40 for rental car.
I’ve never had a problem with Midway - I prefer it to O’hare. Midway is fixing the issues with security by making the security area larger.
I like some of their criteria - “lounge access†- Midway is mostly Southwest which does not have lounges. Also “clear†data - Midway is not a clear airport… I never understood the point of clear when you can buy pre-check/global entry that is available at every airport. I gonna guess that Clear is an advertiser on the points guys website

Any list of airports should include a Customs provision. Any west coast airport Customs area will be horrible if you happen to arrive right after a flight from China. Landed from Europe once and the captain told everyone to hurry up and get off the place because a flight from China just landed.

I’ve only been through Detroit once but I quite liked it as well. Very clean, free wifi (this was back in 2010) that was a big deal then. It was all good for me.
How is Philly not in the worst section? I have flown in and out of that airport quite a lot over the last 20 years and have never gotten through without a delay or them losing my luggage. I will avoid the Philly airport like the plague.
Midway isn’t that bad, O’hare, that’s another story. And like someone else posted, if you don’t include LaGuardia in the worst column the list is shit.
Also feel the need to point out Wisconsin doesn’t have an airport of note except for one week every summer during the overalls convention in Oshkosh

I agree with you on both. I have never had any issues in Detroit. I think they get dinged b/c of weather-related delays and cancellations.

Like others in this thread, I think Detroit’s not bad at all, ORD is awful, LaGuardia is a dump.
It’s my home airport so my take is probably way off, but Boston Logan I feel is like a solid B, maybe B-. I rarely have issues with long lines at security there, which is great. But holy shit the signage is awful, esp. when trying to leave the airport, and the construction they’re doing now is making things even worse. I’ve lived here for well over a decade and I still get turned around trying to find my way to Central Parking about 30% of the time.
I usually fly in and out of MKE when visiting family. Gotten screwed by the rental car companies a few too many times there. I always get a chuckle out of the 'Recombobulation Area" sign on the other side of security though.

It’s been ages since I’ve been through O’Hare but I don’t remember it being particularly bad, busy sure. Orlando on the other hand, hate it. I can never figure out how to get in and out of the fucking place without dropping a small fortune on tolls. Fuck Florida.
I was surprised to not see DIA (Denver). The terminal is always half under construction. Luggage return takes forever. Car rentals are no where near the terminal (which is what makes Phoenix shit).

Yeah, that’s part of the reason why Detroit is a good airport. You fly in and you’re thinking “Fuck, I’m in Detroit” and then you get into the airport and your low expectations are exceeded. You fly into San Diego and you’re thinking “Fuck year, I’m in San Diego Bitches!” and then you spend the first 30 minutes on a crowded bus sitting at red lights!

Cheaper to fly out of Chicago, so I stopped flying out of Milwaukee years ago. More direct flight options as well.

Kansas City is like that. Mostly empty with security at every 3 gates so really easy to plan your departure from that airport. Pretty far from the city though.
San Diego is the closest major airport to where I live so I’ve flown in/out many times. The rental car arrangement doesn’t bother me too much, once you’re used to it. What I find is that the terminals are old and crowded.
I’ve flow in/out of Detroit a few times but the airport didn’t leave an impression. I think the San Jose airport is really good, particularly given the daily volume of flights. I have well over 2 million miles under my butt and I would generally disagree with this particular list of good/bad airports.
The local airport for me is Orange County/John Wayne - it’s small and very easy. And, where else do you get a brakes on/full power short-field takeoff at an extreme climb-out to 800’ then a major power reduction due to noise abatement for the people living in Newport Beach. That’s always fun.
