I know this gets beat to death, but I want individualized recommendations. First. I am 6, 2" and 195 lbs. I want to ride clincher only. I am prepared to spend money, just not Zed tech money. I have been pitched H3 clincher with a H3 deep on the rear (seems heavy and lately read bad stuff on here about them), Zipp 606, and Hed spoked wheels.
I mention my size because of the weight limit on some race wheels (really don’t want that clydesdale sticker). I ride mostly olympic distance in Ohio (HFP and Fat Rabbit) but my A race is Ironman WI. I averaged 17.9 mph on the bike with sinus issues, and extreme heat at IM Louisville last August. That was my first full distance race. I want to train to avg 19 mph on the bike at moo. (not comfortable with the idea of adisk, atleast not yet.
If this is rambling, its because I am trying to give people as much info as possible. Please be kind in response…
i know you said you aren’t comfortable with the idea, but you should be. A deep front wheel is something you should be uncomfortable with if you aren’t confident handling the bike.
Try just a disc cover to start. Then pick a nice front wheel later if that goes well (and it will!)
I plan to use this wheelset for all events. I am wanting versitile(spelling) set. (Windy, hilly) I have heard a disk is not especially comfortable, While i know aero is not always comfy, 5 1/2 -6 hours of discomfort does not a good run make.
Get a disc or disc cover for the wheel and an H3 clincher front. At those speeds, both of those wheels will be faster at the higher yaw angles you’ll be experiencing.
A disc cover on your current rear wheel is as comfortable as your current wheel, and 100% versatile, since you can take it off!
It is also only like $75

Bad stuff about Hed3???
He is my .02 worth. Hed and Zipp are great wheels. Some guys like Ford trucks guys and some guys like Chevy trucks.
I have been using Hed3c (tubular) for 4yrs this upcoming season. You being 195 is no concern for Hed3 clincher.I really dont see that much of a advantage for the Hed deep on the rear.
So just get a cover for my crappy stock spoke wheel? Not being rude, just clarifying…
Basically, yes…in fact, my first “disc” was a 36 spoke wheel with model airplane heat-shrink mylar on it. It was just as aero as any “true” disc, and was comfortable and virtually “bombproof”…and no heavier than a disc. What’s not to like?

Thank you
What is the deal with the bad HED bs going around? Is any of it true? I’ve heard of people getting out-of-round wheels and bent wheels. I don’t even know how that could happen? It’s a friggin’ mold! And they have some QC, I assume.
Yeah what is it with HED’s - the C2 concept of a wider rim sounds good as far as lowering rolling resistance, would love to see data to prove it though.

so far the only independent test of this idea showed no difference on rolling resistance.
H3s…used or new…or Specialized Trispokes (really old at this point…but still probably rolling true and fast). Unless you get caught up in the diminishing returns game of the latest/greatest wheel technology, those will be the last wheels you EVER need to buy.
Sure…a rear disk is faster in most conditions…slightly. Sure…a spoked, deep wheel (404/808/Stinger/etc) can be lighter, but that doesn’t translate into much speed at all unless you’re climbing Ventoux. But the H3s and the original design Specialized Trispokes are almost completely bomb-proof. I had a pair of the Specialized wheels for nearly 10 years without incident. They took more than their share of knocks and were even used as daily trainers as well as racers for at least 5 years of that time. I’ve also owned a pair of H3s from Hed. Same wheel. Same great performance and durability.
I wish I still had those Specialized wheels, instead of getting caught up in the wheel wars…that are impossible to keep up with.
