Another race bites the IM dust....goodbye SOMA

Not listed on Lifetime AZ series site. Guessing it will be rebranded as an IM70.3 Just what we wanted. Same race for an extra $100 plus dollars. Even with a course change on the bike…

Part of this new WTC/LT Co-branding I guess.

Kimo confirmed it will be a WTC event but might retain the Soma name.

If they don’t change the bike 2500 people on that course will be a dangerous cluster fuck.

This x100! The course was dangerous anyway. Some of the turns were just not well thought out. I hope WTC cleans this up a bit.

What desertdude said. That’s crazy.

Man, I loved SOMA 70.3. Inexpensive, close to home, and brought a good crowd.

Not likely to happen, given the Tempe/Scottsdale/Indian Res mashup in the area, unless WTC brings their clout to it. That’s one of the reasons for the current course, is Scottsdale didn’t want to play ball with the RD to expand the course northward at all.

How much does the WTC charge the race director for the IM brand? Seems like these days you can’t put on a long course race without it.

So is there going to be a race? was planning on doing it this year, but no news about the transfer (other than here) and no announcement of a WTC race in Tempe in Oct.

Trying to make my 2015 schedule

they being wtc are going to announce a new race in the west in january. My guess is if it’s Soma you’ll find out then officially.

It’s kind of funny that they would want to retain the name “Soma,” which is from a restaurant-sponsor that closed six years ago.

Interesting, I wondered why the name SOMA.

They’re going to have to move the race earlier in the year. The run isn’t warm enough for WTC 70.3 standards.

I thought LifeTime and the WTC officially joined forces back in October with the intent of the WTC absorbing the LT series.

I think in the end it will be lifetime absorbing WTC.

I thought it was supposed to go the other way with WTC selling all to LT.

I think you guys are missing the point and stuck on semantics. At the time, the WTC owns Ironman. Under the current partnership, the Lifetime events are being re-branded as Ironman events, thus the WTC is absorbing the existing races. Now, it may be quite possible that, in the very near future, LifeTime physically purchases the WTC from PE. Until then, the WTC seems to be responsible for the LifeTime series. (At least, that’s my understanding.)

It’s a bit more convoluted than that. LT gave up the Soma race, but are keeping the other 2 (Marquee and Tempe) not sure if they will continue the Leadman option for Marquee. However I have heard you will earn IM points for the LT races.

The run isn’t warm enough for WTC 70.3 standards.

That’s some funny stuff right there.
