Another! cyclist hit in OC

It must be open season on cyclist. Sorry if this was already posted.

Irvine bicyclist, 52, is a hit-run victim By Jonathan Abrams, Times Staff Writer
11:43 AM PDT, July 12, 2007

A hit-and-run collision in Irvine this morning left a 52-year-old man fighting for his life in a hospital, authorities said.

Suha Assadullah of Irvine was found at 5:15 a.m. in a pool of blood in a bicycle lane on Culver Drive, south of Warner Avenue. He was apparently struck by a vehicle as he rode his bicycle, said Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield.

There were no witnesses to the accident, and Assadullah has been unconscious and unable to communicate, Handfield said.

“We do not know how this happened or what happened because the vehicle left the scene,” Handfield said.

The vehicle would have damage to the right front, including the lights, hood and possibly the windshield, he said.

Anyone who may have seen the collision is asked to call Det. Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.

Sad, how could you leave if you hit someone?

We almost were hit yesterday on Irvine Blvd just past Alton. A green Grand Am pulled out right in front of our group of 20. Totally oblivious, the driver stopped a red light shortly afterwards where he was questioned for his actions, he could have cared less he came inches from taking out the front of the group, who missed the car by swerving left into two traffic lanes, thank goodness there was no auto traffic in the lanes adjacent.

I’m getting back on the track.

It’s scary out there. I ride the SA river trail…boring I know but no cars.

PS: OC roads look safe with some nice bike lanes but …well you know. That said, my wife and I are riding Santiago canyon next weekend. We need some hills.

Be careful it’s dangerous out there.

.

don’t really have the stomach for that stuff…

In May of 2004 I witnessed a motorcyclist on a Kawasaki get hit by a brown Chevy trailblazer on the corner of Merriman and West Chicago in Livonia, MI. His boots came off also, but tragically his feet were still in them.

theres a lot of advantages to staying on a track. No death, no dismemberment, but perhaps more importantly, you can work on sustained power output. No stopping for lights and traffic and turns.

Damn I hate hearing this. I’ve been doing my long rides in the San Juan, San Clem., O’side area, and also up in MV and Ladera, and a good portion of that is bike lane with cars. Guess I’ll be living on the edge. Jeez! The ONLY even shred of consolation was that this was at 5:15am, indicating he was riding in the dark as it is just getting light at that time. Still, scary stuff!

With the high levels of uninsured (and unlicensed) motorists we have in So. Cal., nearly all car vs. bike accidents will be hit & run unfortunately. Most importantly I hope this man recovers but I also hope they catch this bastard!

same here.

*"IRVINE – An Irvine man struck by a hit-and-run driver along Culver Drive on Thursday remains in a coma and has perhaps only a 50 percent chance of survival, police said. *

***He most likely lay for 30 minutes in the bike lane in the southbound lanes of Culver before an off-duty police officer found him near his crumpled bike in a pool of his own blood, police said. ***
***“With the collision in the dark hours of the morning, it wasn’t until daybreak that someone could see him,” Cherney said. ***
“In my 10 years of investigating traffic collisions, I’ve never seen this little evidence at the scene of a hit-and-run.”
***Police say they have only received one phone call about the wreck. **Public assistance in the investigation will be crucial to solving the case, Cherney said. *

Even more sad that evidently nobody stopped in the half hour he was laying there.
The area is well lit and Culver is well traveled this time in the morning already.
I don’t buy that he was invisible because of darkness…

On the other hand the big group rides going through the Irvine area piss off motorists bigtime (running reds, taking the whole road -2lanes-) etc.
Relations certainly are strained, and Superdave’s comment certainly shows that riders are equally oblivious regarding their rights and the concept of “sharing” the road (contrary to popular believe among cyclists a group ride on public roads is not the TDF).
And all the group rides who RACE on the multi-use bike paths don’t make the situation any better (pissing off pedestrians who smash bottles and throw thorns/tacks/gravel on certain multi-use trails).

Roid-Rage and Road-Rage are both no good.
