Another Brick Question Thread

Hello,

I’m training for my first Oly so the distances have increased, and while I have been able to dedicate more time to training by eliminating uneccessary weight training and other activities. My family obligations prevent me from doing as much as I would like. My question is this. Over the last couple of months (the offseason,) I have been focusing on my swim so I have been doing one long bike and one long run each week. I would then do a brick workout composed of a short bike and a short run strictly to get more run AND bike time in a week. I’m not a fan of frequent brick training but due to time this is the only way I have been able to get two running and two biking sessions a week. Is there any negative affect on performance from doing this? As I get closer to the actual season, which starts in the next couple of months for me, I will go back to two separate biking sessions and two separate running sessions with even much less weight training. I can’t eliminate weights completely as my joints always seem to react negatively when I go without weight training for too long (maybe it is mental).

Which discipline is your weakness?

Just get through your first Oly and then start to think about all this trainnig stuff. Tim

The bike and it happens to be my favorite. I have to admit I like cervelorider’s response. Haha. Maybe I am over contemplating this.

He is correct, just train as much as you can.

Thanks guys.

Nothing at all wrong with using brick to get in additional short runs. While it is true that overuse can lead to injuries, IMO most of those whose preach the evil of bricks just don’t like them. Labeling them as unnecessary or bad is a good excuse for them not to do them.

That is not to say that they are a must-do. Bricks have there place especially if you have time restraints.

I did a “Sprint Brick” tonight. 20 Km bike (trainer), followed by a 5Km jog (Treadmill).

Like you, in order to fit in multiple runs and bikes in the week I need to do a few of these.
