Was out in VERY crappy weather on the bike. I am on PowerCranks now 100% of the time, and they are a neat trick and a great training tool.
As I was in an intersection the wind gusted up to about 30mph, I could not get into the pedal and fell over. Well, a cop was there in the intersection and called Ambulance who demanded that I get transported the all of two blocks to the hospital (that I was going to for work anyways).
They were nice enough to bring my bike, let me walk out the back of the ambulance and check my email. After not checking in I rode home on the same bike (in the rain) and on power cranks.
This guy is a magnet for crazy stuff, you may have come here after the subzero torn shorts frozen . . . ahem . . . parts story, or the t-bone just before GFT, or the exploding burning van in his driveway. The last two had pics. The first one didn’t. Oh, and there were pics from his race, and witnesses too, where wizard of oz-like wind and rain come to blow everything away.
R10C is like the sacrificial anode on an outboard motor, corrosion is attracted to him and the rest of us are protected.
Glad you’re okay Chip. For future reference though, they can’t make you go with them unless they fell that you can’t competently make your own medical decisions. You weren’t drunk were you?
Just tell them to let you sign the release waiver and be on your way.
Glad to hear that only your pride was injured Chip. Still its bizarre that they insisted that you went to the hospital. Did you ride an extra 2 miles on the way home to make up for the lost training?
R10C of sound mind? That is a stretch. Have you met him?
If you are acting a little goofy after a crash, the Paramedics can decide for you that you need to go. We may look at the mechanism of injury and assume you are in shock or that there are likely to be a head injury. Better take a few patients too many, than one too few. A fall off a bike, even at standstill can be enough for a concussion. Lots of adrenaline can make you confused and even combative after an accident. Some people don’t remember if their head hit the ground. Based on the way you act after an accident, the medics can take away your right to refusal.
Hey, they might have looked at your cranks at deemed the bike “broken”!!!
Chip, just take care - you might feel fine in the moment, but often whiplash etc. takes a while to manifest. If you are getting a headache or neckpain later tonight, do not hesitate to call 911 again. We love that stuff. Just kidding. “The accident was 8 hours ago? Why didn’t you get checked out then”.
What was funny is I was laughing. Trying to get the power crank up and over, the other foot into the pedal, on light gravel, into the gusting wind…in front of a cop in the middle of the road (turn lane). I could have WALKED to the hospital in less time that it took to argue that I didnt need to go to the hospital.
End of the day, the cop really over reacted - and yes, they were telling me that my bicycle was broken and not able to be ridden…due to the obviously broken crankset
