Another amazing weekend by Keith (KJ) at Lonestar

If you guys haven’t done at least one of these races, you’re missing out.

I don’t know how he pulls this off, but no joke i think he had almost the whole island of galveston volunteering. Normally i hate getting to races late, but he must have had 40 people doing body marking. Then some how he finds even more for the run and they have them all over the place.

The swim had buoy’s i believe every hundred so you got to actually race instead of checking how good your eye site is.

On the half run, with loops there were aid stations of some sort almost every half mile for something.

He got someone to Live broadcast the race over the internet so my parents got to see me run and finish both the races even thought they were up here in iowa.

A finisher medal, t-shirt, towel, waterbottle and hat for the half and quarter races.

Im sure theres even more stuff. But these are seriously great races.

Thanks:)
Comments like yours make it all worth it…
Taking the crew out to post-race shindig in Galveston right now. Just finished picking up the race site.
Must…have…beer…

Haha, no really it was awesome for my first half. Quite honestly the webcam thing was the great. My dad must have talked for 20 mins about that thing.

Keith,

I couldn't agree with Grant more. I'd heard about your races from a friend who now has done Timberman, Mooseman and Lone Star. So I came to Galveston this weekend with high expectations -- probably unreasonably high. I ran into some of your crew coming in Thursday night and then saw one of them after the race. He said, "how'd we do?" My response: it was a flawless race. Thanks from all of us.

Keith, Grant is right. EXCELLENT RACE! My fiance accompanied me to the race and had so much fun just hanging out at it that she wants to do a tri now! The volunteers on the run were great, aid stations on the run were more abundant that cops on a holiday weekend. If this race had any flaws, I didn’t see them. My hat is off to you and your crew for the exceptional job. I hope the beer was good. Cheers!

OK, I have to admit I tried to sign up for CA 70.3 and missed it. I saw NO 70.3 and Galveston and said, done the IM 70.3 thing maybe I’ll try a race a little closer to home. Most of my friends and training partners were headed to NO but I thought Galveston would be fun for the family and a bit closer. Wow, I love it when I make a good decision as it is rare. The staff, organization, volunteers, support was AWESOME at this race. The swim was great, the roads for the bike were in fine shape and the run which I thought would be a beating as it was 4 loops, was great! Seeing your family, coach, friends, etc 4 times on the course was so much better than out on a lonely road pounding out the miles.

All of the aid stations were full from start to finish. Boy scouts with wet towels and sponges along the route, sunscreen to go along with every drink and snack you could ask for along the run and plenty of support on the bike. So glad to do a race with a smaller # than to do a race with 3000 participants just to say I did an IM race…

The goody bag was adequate but for the $$'s this race was a bargain! If you like organization, a good venue and plenty of support you will like this race.

I would put this race on anyone’s list if you are looking for an early season race.

I totally agree.

Our first visit to this race and recommend it.

The swag was also hard to beat !

I also had a great time this weekend in Galveston. I’ve heard good things about your races, and I was not disappointed. Thanks!

Great job this weekend, mate! Congratulations to you and an enormous ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers.

Please consider having a full iron in Texas some time soon!

Might have to put this race on the schedule for next year. Sounds like a good time!

Thanks again.
The webcasting was fantastic. We didn’t promote it too much, as we wanted to be sure it would be high-quality. Chris and Charlie spent days working on it, lining up camera locations, running wires, etc.

We spent some time doing course preview videos which will be online shortly.

As Easter is the first weekend in April next year, Lone Star will be April 23-25. This also means that Palm Beach will be alive and kickin’, and the lagoons will be full, the waterslides will be working, etc. Those will be open for spectators for free. Great way to spend a day while watching the family race.

Trying to get the manager of the Colonel Paddlewheel boat to let us jump off of it to start the swim.

Working on a Gulf Coast Feast on Sunday night, on Palm Beach…and a complimentary Pancake breakfast too.

Lone Star was a challenge this year, due to the hurricane. But the city of Galveston and Moody Gardens really pulled through. The road over San Luis Pass will be fixed for next year, so we’ll have our one loop bike course, too.

Already excited for next year:) On to Mooseman!

Great. You should be exhausted, and you’re already listing off new ideas for next year. I love it. Just don’t get so fond of TX that you stop doing races up here in New England. Looking forward to this year’s Mooseman.

Don’t worry, we’re fired up about Timberman, Mooseman, and Black Fly…and our new race for 2010, which will also be in New England:)
.

I love how all you have to do is mention one of KJ’s events (Timberman, Moosey, Lonestar), and it is like saying “Beetlejuice!” - he magically appears.

We’re only now polishing off the last bit of the maple syrup from our last visit to Ellacoya (I don’t know why we saved it for so long; but it was, and is, damn tasty),
so I need to score me another one this summer.

Of course KJ and his crew and their amazing vollies did an awesome job. They never don’t.

My only request for this year’s T-man is - let’s try to do something about the weather.
We can do w/o the whitecaps for the swim (the poor sprint folks the day before had it really rough), and it’d be nice if for once it wasn’t too too humid on the run.
That’s ‘all’ I ask.

Keith, I am cool with massive whitecaps on the swim and bright sky with 95F temps and massive humidity for the run. Don’t listen to Murphy’s Law when you sit down with your race planning team, including that guy god who delivers the weather. If he is busy, just forward the text from this posting for Timberman, and everything should be perfect. Normally I would also ask for wind, but since ML is in the race, and he is more aero than me, no wind will help me more on the bike and will hurt ML more on the run…so whitecaps, heat, sun and no wind…that pretty well covers it.

Agreed! Keith and his crew did a great job in Galveston. My family also liked their mini vacation. also glad to see Galveston is recovering well.

It was a PR course, that’s for sure. It felt so nice flying back to Moody Gardens on the bike averaging 24+ mph with the tail wind!

Me and some friends are debating if the half bike was short by a mile.

I got 54.8 on my computer a little bit being off is from me clicking it on after i get on the bike and get going. But the sprint mileage on my computer was dead on so was the speed.

I think that they announced beforehand that the course would be closer to 55 miles than 56 miles due to changing the course after Ike.

Grant, yeah half bike was probably short by about a mile. I did 56 miles though due to making a wrong turn and getting back to transition a few minutes after the bike start. Don’t ask me how I managed that  lol

LOL… now that is impressive. It was cool though. I got to play lead biker for about 5 mins because i hit the first loop right when the police motorcycles were rounding the corner for the lead guy haha.

Now if someone can explain how i only avged .3mph faster in the sprint then the half. That woudl be a great conversation haha.
