Another Alcatraz question - first timer ferry?

The sked for Alcatraz has the first shuttle for relays and “first timers” at the ungodly 4-4:20 am time slot. Otherwise my AG shuttle goes at the slightly more respectable 5:30. This is my first escape but I’ve done the swim a few times in various formats. Thoughts on any need to get on the first timers shuttle? Anyone know what the purpose? Just to calm peoples nerves (by putting them on shuttles with everyone freaking out)?

I’ve only done it once, last year’s freezing early march edition, but I don’t see any reason why you would get on the first timers shuttle.

There can be some jockeying for position on the ferry itself for primo spots closer to the exit and whatnot but nothing worth getting there hours early for. Once the shuttle drops you off you just stand around on a pier or hang on the ferry until the last person boards. I’d take the extra sleep any day.

Last year was my first as well. I was on the first shuttle and one of the first on the ferry. But I’m always at a race long before it starts. In hind-sight, I don’t really see any reason to be on the first shuttle.

Once at the dock, I opted to drop off my clothes bag in the bin and just wear my wetsuit on. Next time I do it, I’m going to wait to put my wetsuit on. I really underestimated how long we sit on the damn ferry.

Also, bring nutrition on the Ferry. It is a VERY VERY long time from boarding to swimming.

As for positioning, yes people will try to get close to the door. If you get a good spot and then leave to use the restroom, just assume somebody will take it (unless you ask the person you’re sitting next to to save it). When the pro’s start to line up, I’d start to walk down to the jump off point. However, even if you wait, the boat empties very very fast so it really doesn’t matter.

Good luck.

Unless you’re already awake, take the later shuttle.
Everyone is on the same ferry; so, being on an earlier shuttle makes no difference.
The only “advantage” of going earlier is better seating on the ferry (which means a better spot on the floor for the most part).

I’m betting that the purpose of the first timers’ shuttle is to move the masses along faster and lessen the rush later. Don’t bother.

sorta what I was thinking, on all points above… my sleep cycle thanks you

Last time I did it I got very hot on the boat, and it wasn’t even an Escape size crowd.
