Would you allow for paddlers instead of kayaks? I know a number of people who are getting into long distance paddling, although a kayak gives a much better draft.
Also, If I wear a Garmin 310XT, would I still need to kayak? It would be more epicer.

Wow - this sounds really cool. The only thing that possibly sounds cooler is adding a kayak portion to the race or replacing the swim portion with a kayak portion. That would seperate your race from other races and maybe make it almost like a survival of the shawangunks type race. Especially if there are kayak rental places. Your race sounds really cool, though!
I think the long swim is a key point of appeal for this race, though I do admit that a kayak bike run would be pretty awesome…
Maybe swim/bike/kayak/run?
Is this what you’re looking for?

yes, wow does that sound cool! I really need to learn how to kayak. I went to a kayaking show last weekend and it looked cool, so I’m trying to figure out how to learn the sport. I went on a kayak tour in Bar Harbor, Me last year and it was awesome.
I hope you do this race, and I can pretty much guarntee that there will be some splash here on ST for it. I would love this type of event, and I vote adding a kayak leg for a 4th event too. Maybe two divisions, one 3 event, one 4 event? I’m all over it for 2010, dont care too much when you have it. And I’m not so sure that it is Ironman people that would be doing it. More like ex Ironman people, and those of us that are looking for the new adventure…
Let me know if I can help, I put on over a 100 races myself over the years, including all of the legs mentioned…

if you can make a test run a weekday thing, I’ll work on getting some Ottawa crew to drive down the nite before, do the training test run, and then drive home the next day…just give us some notice.
I like what you said about “looking for the next adventure”. Me, too, I’m just not sure what it is. I’d really to see something with a kayak section or maybe a different order of events than normal or unusual distances or maybe another race like SOS. Maybe something like the New Zealand Coast to Coast race would also be really cool. I feel like I’ve been there and done that with IM, but I would really like a new endurance sports challenge. This Seneca Epic race really sounds like a wonderful start, however.
I like the name ‘Epic’ for the race; hopefully no one will trademark it and send them a cease and desist letter.
another vote for actually having the race. a bunch of us are heading to musselman this year and planned on scouting out the area for the epic in 2010 (2009 is already booked).
SOS was the coolest race i have ever done and we need more unique tri options like that.
Any update on this race idea? Is going to happen? This year or next?
I still want to do it.
I’d like to echo the comments about another race in the vague style of SOS. I did SOS a couple of years ago, and despite having an awful race from a physical perspective (pre-existing knee problems), it was one of the best days out I’ve ever had. I’d be doing again this year if not for the entry SNAFU this year. I would love to see some more races that involved a “crossing”, and I’d certainly be up for a test run this summer if it was done more along the lines of a training day (ala Epicman/Irontour). I guess the Finger Lakes are too wide for us to do a double crossing? The swim/run choice during a 3rd leg seems particularly awesome.
Please lets find a way to a let do a test run and see how this works “on the ground”.
any more thought on a 2009 test run?

Unforunately, this is going to have to be put on hold until next summer. I’ve got Musselman in two weeks, then the Portland Triathlon a month after that. there goes the summer.
I am committed to holding the EPIC in 2010, though. Stay tuned for the date.
And, of course, you are always welcome to come swim, bike, and ride the proposed courses! The lake and highways are always open.
see you in 2010,
Jeff
If I can convince my Kayaker buddy to give it a try, I just might.
Where are you thinking for the swim start?

I’m thinking off Anthony Beach Rd, which is just down the hill from Anthony Road Winery. They’ve been a tremendous supporter of the Musselman over the years, and a lot of the family has done the race. I still need to scout it out more closely, but this looks promising:

Trying to decide whether June or September would be better.
If your looking for input. I vote September. That lake is cold in June.
It’s time to start registering for next season. Is this race still in the works. If so hive you settled on a date?

I’m still working on this, believe it or not. The inaugural Syracuse 70.3 in September threw a monkey wrench into the local race calendar.
Right now I’m working on the Aug. 29 weekend. In order to hold it then, I need to move the Portland Triathlon back a weekend, to Aug. 15. I’m working hard on that, but there are lots of moving parts. I hope to have an answer within the next couple weeks.
Thanks for your patience. Sorry for the delay!
