Ann Arbor rides

so it looks like i may be in ann arbor this weekend. i don’t care to tailgate or go watch the game.
i have a planned 5.5hr ride.
anyone up there have ideas? i’ve looked on 2 wheel tango for some loops. anyone feel like riding?

Take Huron river drive west out of Ann Arbor towards Dexter, Chelsea. Very common route so you should have some company until you get to Chelsea.

Dexter-Chelsea road is nice too. Once you get to Chelsea, the road surface is crap though.
If you take Huron River into Dexter, left on Central, right on Main, Dexter-Chelsea is right before the viaduct at the A&W. On your return from Chelsea, you can take Main, which becomes Dexter-Ann Arbor, which has a decent climb (for SE michigan) right before Wagoner.

That won’t get you 5.5 hrs. Maybe 2 if you are really taking your time.

Huron River drive was one of my favorite routes to ride when I was living in A2, that is a great suggestion. Especially in the fall.
The crew at Wheels in Motion might have a group ride that day, may be worth looking into. Full disclosure, that was my old shop (actually Campus Bike & Toy, which was owned by the same people) when I was in college.

Look up rides on mapmyride.com. Huron river drive out to Chelsea, with a lollipop is my recommendation. I have found the best time to ride is starting right around tailgate time and trying to finish before the game is over- a lot fewer drivers!

Hey the Michigan Triathlon Team is going to be riding on Saturday morning most likely. Last week we did a century but I’m not sure if some of the guys will be down for another. Either way if you want to meet up for a 40 or so mile ride and find some roads we’d love to have you with!

I live about 50 miles east of there and we do ride to Ann Arbor occasionally but you’ll have a much nicer ride if you head west. If you get to Chelsea (about 15 miles) here is a map for a century ride I did in July that started there. I’d never ridden there before but the whole route was good roads and low traffic route and the countryside quite nice too. The markings may even still be visible . . .

AA is a big biking town so by the weekend you should have a host of options and some ride partners.

The road surface on Dexter-Chelsea? Or on Cavanaugh Lake road? They JUST repaved the really awful section of Dexter-Chelsea. I nearly peed myself with happiness!

On Dexter-Chelsea, between downtown Chelsea and Fletcher. But I was only back in Ann Arbor from June through early August after 6 years in glass smooth northern California, and now in just-as-rough-as-Michigan central mass. Last time I rode Dexter-Chelsea, they were out patching between Freer and Fletcher. With a shovel.

thanks everyone. sounds like some good fun up in michigan.

I know you have already gotten loads of great advice, but I just had to chime in. I spent 4 years of undergrad and then 2 years of grad school at the U, so I have a soft spot in my heart for Ann Arbor. The last ride I did there before moving out to SF was a great century. Simple out and back, little-to-no traffic, and on my favorite roads; you’ll see that I added in the out-and-back on Dexter Chelsea because like people say, it’s great.

Also, depending on your plan for the effort, my training buddy (that actually did this ride with me) is a great guy and pretty much looks to go long every weekend. PM me if you want me to put you in touch with him.

bump for thursday

If you are in or around downtown you can stop in the new shop called Transition Rack (On fourth street off liberty)

The owner Will is a strong rider and usually heads out weekend mornings for some longer efforts.

Cheers

where do you guys meet? i’m still looking at options.

we meet at the flagpole near the diag or at our “Tri house”

Email me if you want to join up and I can figure out some details for you!

I live at the Tri House too. My roommate Ryan is Kona bound and I believe he plans to ride a century tomorrow. I can ask him if he feels like having company :).

Riding with him would be a fast ride though, so be warned. We rode a century last weekend with him and averaged 22.8mph!
