Ankle pain

I went for a run on Wednesday and since then my ankle has been bothering me. The week before I was running in the dark and rolled the ankle on some uneven sidewalk, but shook it off and finished the run without undue pain. That’s only thing I can think of that would lead to what I’m feeling now.

The pain is not that bad, I can walk fine for instance, but I don’t want to do my long run on Saturday and screw myself for a few weeks afterwards. Would taping the ankle help or should I just stay off it? How long should I give it? How about cycling?

Tom

I think you know the answer - skip the long run this weekend. Also, can you be specific as to where your pain is: inside or outside (more likely) of the ankle.

Remember the PRICE principles this weekend: biking may be OK with some tape, ice before and after. Listen to your body

The pains on the outsides about one inch forward of the ankle bone and a half inch down.

That is about the exact location of the anterior talofibular ligament and is the most common structure injured in a typical lateral ankle sprain. This usually heals well given some time - you can get back on your ankle usually at will when your ankle allows. Peroneal tendon injuries - behind and above the ankle bone (no where near where you mentioned) can be more serious or prolonged if you push it (but thankfully are more unusual as well).
