Does anyone else here object to the fact that dog owners are expected (and around me usually do) clean up their dogs’ #2, whereas horses, of which there are a fair number on the trails that I run on, are free to drop their rather voluminous dung all over the place.
Horse owners aren’t even really getting any exercise. At least dog owners are walking WITH their dogs. I am not saying horseback riding is easy (like equestrian and such), but these weekend tourers who ride along their horses going at a loping pace, it’s not like they are exerting themselves. They should get up off those saddles and clean that stuff up. Or they should have one of those poop bags like on the horses in NYC. I just don’t get it.
Am I the only one who has a problem with this? What makes horses so special?
Man, I am with you on this. In Cleveland, our parks system has an extensive system of dirt bridle trails. These were created years ago specifically for horses, though many people run/hike there as well. I have no problem with the horseowners levaing the manure on those trails - after all, they are for horseback riding.
However those trails frequently intersect with the paved all-purpose trail that were really designed for running/walking/rollerblading, etc. And its not uncommon for Seabiscut to drop his load at the moment he crosses the asphalt. That’s just wrong.
there was a great MTB/running trail at Ft Leavenworth that had a coupe signs up stating somethign to the effect “MTB Riders please be good stewarts and don’t ride trail after heavy rains.” Unfortunately Leavenworth is also home to one of the few active Fox Hunting club left in DOD. I think it was a rule or something that they could ONLY ride after heavy rains. They thrashed that trail until you could barely run on it let alone ride on it.
And the dung!!!..!!.!!..The idea of riding my MTB over to the stables, jumping off, dropping the bike shorts, and taking a dump in the middle of the stables came to mind a couple times…
i’m with you…with every huge pile of poop I see on the trail, it infuriates me even more. it is rude, inconsiderate of others, and horribly disgusting. how can these owners think that leaving big dump piles is somehow ok? shame on them!!!
