loved the interview with Andy in the recent USAT magazine. How many times was the interviewer going to ask Andy if he’s putting in more volume now that he’s doing IM?
I thought Andy answered it pretty well - he said he’s been developing his aerobic engine since the age of 5 and the past six years have been spent improving his triathlon speed and endurance and he’s going to continue doing what he’s doing - it’s the consistency, not a season of crazy volume.
To the other posts saying that Potts is evidence that it does not take 5 years to prepare for Hawaii, as Slowman suggested, Andy pretty much said that the past 6 years were needed before he did Hawaii…
And to really blow some minds, Andy averages three, yes 3! hours of running per week! and between 10 and 14 hours of biking a week.
from what I’ve heard: always doing the bike and run back to back to make a 1:45 bike and 45 min run a tough 2.5 hour long workout.
Just remember as the “no need for crazy volume” filters down to the average joe with a job
potts volume is still a lot =)
.
I edited the OP. did you see the running and cycling volume?
so, is that an ISM Deluxe saddle?
I love my ISM road saddle.
nope, whats his weekly running and cycling volume?
i recall in the article I read (don’t know if it was the same) he was doing a trainer workout in his home, then ran to the pool to swim, then ran home. i wonder if incidental runs like that are even counted?
like the guy who broke the 4 minute mile, was known as doing very little volume, but if you count him running from work to the track and back each day it was a decent amount, heh

from what I read most recently, he now has a treadmill in his house, an entire room set up for training. no more running to OTC. though, I also read that those 2 mile warm up runs to the OTC were recorded.
3 hours sounds like nothing, but when you tack on 30-45min on to the end of 90-120 minute bike rides 6 days a week, those runs will will feel like 60-70min long runs.
Please… we all know the way to get fast is to put in as much volume as possible.
I’m off to buy the latest “Going Long” book now.
Now how do I do pink font…
I wonder if anyone involved in the volume debates here other than the pros has ever approached potts weekly volume?
heh
it would be hard unless you are single and have a part time job.

Can anyone send me a pdf of the article I am interested in reading it?
thanks

I don’t know if he’s riding an ISM saddle, but that’s a picture that they did of him with Paul Thomas’ bike. Another picture was posted awhile back…
My buddy beat Potts last year in the lead up to the Olympics.
He worked full-time up until January.
Weekly volume is a useless stat.
