I thought Lenny Kravitz rocked the house in Rio.
Metallica, Foo Fighters, and Roger Waters were good as well.
Nice to see Spinal Tap as well.
Felt sorry for Genesis - how many people in the crowd even knew who they were?

Did it look like a lot of empty seats when Genesis came on? And Rio actually happened? (Since there was talk about having to cancel.) I was out most of the day so didn’t see much of it.
KestrelKerri’s and my good friend works for the guy who came up with the whole thing and put it on and she’s been in London for a couple of weeks. She kept emailing yesterday from the control room and was very excited as to how well it was all going.

It seemed to go well - I watched it on Universal HD. Rio looked like it was on the beach, which seemed like a strange spot, but once it was dark and Lenny went on, it looked pretty crowded and happening.
The acts earlier in the day, like Genesis were bound to be looking at a lot of empty seats. It was pretty obvious from the lists that NY and LON were the lead venues, with Madonna and the Police headlining. I thought they were both outdone by Waters and Metallica.
It was a somewhat strange assortment of acts. I tuned in at one point and realized that I was looking at Cat Stevens, of all people.
Cat Stevens? Do you mean Yusuf Islam?

Good to see the Foozers rocking it. Grohl is incredible, but his true genious is when you see him live.
I was hoping he was going to break out Teen Spirit, but I assume that they’ve never done that live before, and that it might upset some people…
Cat Stevens? Do you mean Yusuf Islam?
Yeah–I think that’s what he meant. BTW, which of his songs do you find most subversive, Moon Shadow or Peace Train?
Al Gore “the tre” was by far my favorite. 100 mph in a Prius…just wow.
The band from Antarctica - Nunatak.
Nunatak band members are:
Matt Balmer - Electronics Engineer - Singer, Guitar
Tris Thorne - Communications Engineer - Fiddle
Ali (Alison) Massey - Marine Biologist - Saxophone
Rob Webster - Meteorologist - Drums
Roger Stilwell - Field General Assistant (polar guide) - Bass
The penguins were cute, too.
I unfortunately fast-forwarded through them. In fact, I DVRed the whole thing in HiDef and just FF through to what I wanted to see.
Lenny Kravitz was great (as expected), Foo Fighters and Roger Waters stand out as I think back on the parts I watched. Madonna was interesting as usual, in her umpteenth makeover. I missed Metallica. Duran Duran looked and sounded tired.
The Police were ok, I’m glad I didn’t pay up for a ticket to hear them live. What the fuck was Sting thinking bringing Kanye West out to ruin their close??? I understand bringing “their great friend” John Mayer as he can actually sing and play guitar.
I believe you can now watch all the performances on mtv.com
.
I’m not sure the Police actually brought Kanye West on - I read somewhere that people thought he busted on because he’s an oafish schmuck. Frankly, I thought the Police were pretty ordinary anyway, and Madonna’s schtick was exactly the same as her concert, which was on Universal HD the night before and a little too much to absorb.
Metallica really woke the crowd up. Waters did Money, the Wall, and Us and Them. I was dearly hoping he’d do Run Like Hell, but I guess it might have been out of place.
I think Mayer is like fucking Zelig - he seemed to show up everywhere. I will admit, for kind of a weenie singer/songwriter, he plays a mean guitar.
Sting introduced the ‘oafish shmuck’ which by the way is a great description that I would not have thought of for him. What a disgraceful segment that was.
Mayer at least comports himself well in public. The tats look pretty stooopid on him, but cie la vie…
I’m not much of a Kanye West fan. I thought Snoop Dogg did a decent job, but it was early in the day and didn’t seem to energize the crowd much. Frankly, I was never a fan of stadium shows, and I suspect that rap/hiphop is not the right style for stadium shows.
Was it just me, or for as beautiful as Alicia Keys is, her body is a bit of a car wreck…almost Britneyesque in its falling off the cliff.
Kayne West’s free-form-rap contribution to thier performance of “Message in a Bottle” was an abomination. It was really hard to take, it was SO horrid. Sting must have really had his arm twisted to allow that to happen.

Ooh, what a shame that body is, when her voice is pure sex! I actually didn’t recognize her on stage as i couldn’t reconcile her voice which I recognized, with her "super-sized’ new physique. Her segment was fantastic, BUT THOSE THIGHS !
I was compelled to google her picture after seeing her sing, and one site had pool pictures of on vacation in Italy. Ouch. Not a fluke.
Isn’t asking about these concerts kind of like asking about professional hockey back when they still played that sport until they realized no one was watching?
I wonder what he would have been going if the Prius didn’t have a speed limiter in it!!!
