And while we're at it Lukas V races Sunday

Lukas races his first big boy race Sun. I give him top 15, maybe top 10. Hopefully he will do well enough to get selected for the next bigger races.

I hope he does awesome.

Did he go back to rejoin the Oregon team ??? …maybe little boys still.

Dave

what race is he doing?

Love the kid, but he needs more time to grow. I bet he doesn’t make it to the bike. He is going to get shelled in the swim.

ITU La Paz in Argentina.

Hate to tell ya, but I don’t think the coaching staff would encourage him to race unless they think he’s ready. Most continental cups the guys hold about 1:10s in training. Lukas has been leaving on the 1:05. The kids a lot faster in the water then you give him credit for. I also think since he’s under the tutelage of Mike Doane who is the USAT resident swim coach and the coach of Andy Potts that he will be a top contender. In a recent email I received, it notes that nothing can replace experience, but luckily Lukas has been racing the ITU format for awhile. Expect him to be a top 5 out of the water type guy.

Didn’t realize it was a continue race thought it was a WC tonight my bad
.

Technically it’s a pan-am cup just to be politically correct.

With all due respect, that’s a bit harsh!

I am willing to give the kid the benefit of the doubt and see what happens. He’s not even 20 years old yet. Lots’ of time to figure things out. Impressed that he’s jumping right into this at this level. Hopefully the pressure will not be too great on him. In addition to building up fitness, it’s also about building up experience.

If he can manage to stay near the front through the swim and the bike( no small task), watch out!

1:10’s SCY? If that’s what you mean, you’re pretty wrong. I think you’re severely underestimating ITU swimming.
Lukas has never been top-5 in his junior races, I fail to see how in less than two months he would step it up to finish that highly at an elite level swim.
I think his swim can improve, but it’s going to take more time.

Readiness doesn’t have much to do with the ITU system, sometimes you HAVE to go to races when you are not optimally prepared. That’s what happens when you have an 11-12 month race schedule.

The analogy of “well he’s Andy Pott’s coach, therefore he’ll make Lukas great” doesn’t really work. Andy was world class way before he got to Doane. I think Doane has done a lot of good things with some triathletes, but to throw out the “Andy’s swim coach” as a reference doesn’t really hold water. I think I could coach Andy and he would still be one of the better swimmers.

What does this mean?? Are you talking about meters here, because those guys would be holding about 1;10’s for meters. But now you are telling me that Lukas is holding a 1;05 base swimming meters too?? Maybe for a set of like 5x100 maybe, but even that would be tough. That would be like doing 5x100 yards on the 57 or so, which means you have to do a 54 or 55 just to make it, and that translates into a 4;35 500 in workout…Are you saying he is that fast now??? If you are not talking about meters, then you have underestimated how fast the guys are swimming for continental cups. Hell, Jordan who is a 2nd pack ironman swimmer will do 1;09’s or better for his hour swim coming up(53 or so of them) and that is a straight swim. They are definately going faster than he is…

For continental cups? 1:10s is off? For WCS yes that number would be off. They’re racing a lot faster. Do you get included in the USAT development emails? honest question. if so please refer to the latest one for the validity of that pacing number.

The reason I included Doane was to mention that Lukas has been receiving top-notch quality swim workouts.

Monty please see below. It is in yards.

Then you have underestimated the other guys…They are not doing 1;10’s for yards…

He is getting his official intro and I am pumped and I can’t wait to see how he does?

This boy has been an absolute sensation so far in his very, very, very young career. Win, lose or draw, it does make a big difference to have AP as a coach. Imagine the insight, the relative training experience, and the idolization???

I will put money down that says Lukas stays within reach during the swim. He will hide on the bike. He will give someone some shock treatment on the run. Though I don’t think he is ready to win, you can bet that he certainly will try. That is the only ‘way’ he has ever known.

1:10 for a continental cup doesn’t sound accurate? So I looked it up. Individuals like Hunter hold about 1:05s sure, second pack looks like they tend to come in on 18:40s or so. Depending on the speed of the athlete this can really vary with how much effort it requires. A fast opening 300 meters and then sitting in on someone else for example. This depends clearly on the open water and what type of swim current and all of that. From my knowledge, and from the emails I’ve exchanged with other athletes, 1:10s is a fairly common pace. Arriving on 1:03 or 1:04 and leaving on 1:10 seems to be a fairly consistent swim time for the guys in speed work entered into continental cups. For their base work they are holding 1:10 pace.

This depends clearly on the open water and what type of swim current and all of that. //

You cannot go pick out some OW times and try and figure what paces people do. That if for the pool if you want to be accurate on how fast folks swim. 1st you said they swim 1;10’s, now you say they swim 1;10 base, two entirely different things. Yes that is the normal base for most those guys, they can go on a faster one for short periods, which is probably what Lukas did, a very short set on 1;05. Like i said, Ironman athletes that do not have to focus on the swim so much will hold sub 1;05 “pace” for their long swims, I expect that the ITU guys are a couple seconds faster. And the 1st 300 is most definitely sub minute pace…That is what the reality of those swims are…

Now with that in mind, it appears that Lukas might be ready to mix it up with the front 20 guys. Keep in mind that in most these races no one gets dropped, but last in line is nearly a minute from the leader, thus dropped on the bike. He will have to work his way into the first dozen or so guys, otherwise he has to hope for a merging of the bike packs. I think it will be a good test for him, and i hope the coaches have gotten him at least ready to be in the mix. A top finish would just be a nice surprise, but not out of the question…

Just trying to understand where I went wrong. Please humor me here.

Saying originally they swam 1:10s did you take that to mean they swim an individual 100 in 1:10 and then leave on another interval?

Then saying they hold 1:10 base is that more of what someone can hold for a 500?

I’m trying to clear up future ambiguity.

Saying someone swims 1;10’s or 1;10 pace means that is their actual speed. So if they do a 1000 it is an 11;40…Swimming 1;10 base means that is their interval. For guys in that category that means if they do 400’s, they leave every 4;40. Means that they have to be at least around a 1;06 paced swimmer to be able to do your base intervals at 1;10 per 100… So guys that swim 1;10 base are faster than guys that swim 1;10 pace as a rule. It means they are doing whole workouts and getting rest using 1;10 per 100, where as 1;10 pace swimmers probably have to use 1;15 as their base…

Like i said, Jordan can swim 1;10 base on his under 1000 sets, and he is a 2nd pack ironman swimmer.(working very hard to bridge that gap however). So guys that have to swim much faster just to survive, are certainly faster than he is… Hope that clears up what i was talking about…
