Ya I have to think performance that comes at some kind of cost.
But last year she ran 2:44 in Roth in early July and then 2:44 in Nice in late September. So if anything the recovery deck is stacked more in her favor this time.
But generally the deeper you go into the well the more you pay for it.
Once again, the womens race in Kona is looking like it will be one of the best ever. I’m hoping Lucy can put on that same master class and drill the swim and the bike and dare everyone to come catch her. Lots of fireworks in store.
This has nothing to do with men and women. It’s bad for everyone if you go deep into the well with super fast overall races with super fast runs (look at Blu in Franfurt after Paris vs Kona). It’s actually worse for the men because their recovery penalty is worse on account of being generally heavier than the women pros. Some people will get away with doubling up summer and October for few years, but they pay in the long run. Mark had 6 Kona wins in a 7 year window. I think the only Ironman he won in the summer was Ironman Japan (but I may be mixing it up with Dave Scott)
I didn’t mean it as a gender thing, only that the women are being careful to do their last IM now and they have an extra month before Kona. Meanwhile we’re expecting the same battle Royale in Frankfurt, so the guys get 2 months less recovery before Nice.
(as a side note, IM should have kept switching the gender of the pro field for Hamburg vs Frankfurt - it makes sense that whichever gender does Kona takes the later timeslot, but I guess that doesn’t matter now)
@Lucy_Charles so it looks like this year a few weeks after Lanza you’re doing 1000% better than last year a few weeks after Nice. Congrats on the win. Did you have pretty well zero speedwork (running) since IM Lanzarote. It was only three weeks before Eagleman!
Dev - Have you done that ski erg??? There is one at the gym I go to now and I’ve used it about 12-14 times. I really like it and it seems to kinda sorta mimic the pull in fly if you do double armed pulls and freestyle with single armed pulls.
Hi @ericmulk the skierg is the motion of double poling and double arm poling in skate skiing. I think that’s kind of why I was able to learn fly in my 50s as I had thirty years of skate ski racing before I got into swimming IM strokes. I thought of buying one during the pandemic, but did not get one due to supply chain. I may still get one, but just prefer to go to the pool or ski and I am trying to reduce my possessions for when my wife and I downsize our place and move to something smaller, where I likely won’t be able to have a ton of sport gear and fitness equipment all over the place
