first of all, i’m presuming you’re a triathlete because you were on aerobars. it’s inconsequential, really.
i’m referring to our interaction yesterday, august 14th. you waved at my team as we rode in the opposite direction. i, for one, didn’t wave back. i’m not sure about my teammates, but i don’t think anyone else waved either. oh, yeah, and we’re roadies.
this letter is intended to prevent the use of this anecode as evidence that roadies are jerks. yes, we were all in matching kits (and we looked gooood, so pro). yes, we ignored your gesture. but we’re not jerks!
when you said hi to us, we were flying into a headwind, taking short pulls and pretty much killing ourselves to hold the wheel of the guy in front of us. i was way above threshold, staring at my teammate’s ass and trying to keep track of his wheel, 3 inches in front of mine. by the time i saw the wave, processed what it meant, and realized i should’ve waved back, you were like a quarter mile behind us.
we weren’t being rude. we weren’t being elitist (although we sometimes can be). it was nothing personal.
i jog 2x a week, in preparation for cyclocross season. i haven’t done a triathlon since 2004, and yet i still frequent slowtwitch. y’all have me hooked.
So, like why do you feel the need to post this here? I could care less if a 30 mph paceline of roadies in matching team kits (me tonight as well) waves to me! In fact, as a triathlete and roadie, I would NOT have waved to a fast moving paceline anyway just because of that!
I see you were really on the edge with your group … are you sure he wasn’t passing you and waving as he went by … and you were just a little too hypoxic??? Probably just meant to check that you guys were OK before he moved on!

One who participates in or universally supports acts of road racing and its surrounding subculture. Activities include: incessant chatter discussing road bike frames, components, and wheels; the weights of said objects, efficiency, and capabilities to “drop” training partners. Roadie Scum tendencies also include narcissistic behavior in relevance to body type, leg definition, body fat, food, and “roadie styles” i.e. ‘I don’t ride with a saddle bag because it makes my bike look slow’ – ‘I will only ride 23 size tires because 25s and 28s look fat and slow’ True roadies exhibit an acute obsession with training and recovery; especially wattage ranges which they discuss openly with ‘non cyclists’ who according to popular opinion don’t give a goats f*#!. Training techniques, sleep, food, recovery techniques and procedures, training ‘speeds,’ race tactics and euro-style hairdos are also heavily ingrained into roadie culture.
So, like why do you feel the need to post this here?
From Meriam-Webster online: Ironic - adj. - (1) having to do with ultradistance triathlon, specifically races organized under the trademark “Ironman” (2) conversation on slowtwitch.
