Unsolicited opinions are welcome!
I didn’t realise the trip to San Fran was quite that bad. I think being Australian and living where I do we are used to quite long road trips! We are doing Vegas and some time in LA already. The kids want to do the theme parks. My wife and I were keen on some things in San Fran…kiddies will probably win out!
Thank you, I had not looked into Yosemite yet although my wife mentioned it. Will have to google and read up on it all!!

LOL.
Amnesia is coming back from a break after being able to be in touch with Eric and the team.
I obviously would not have posted what I do for a living if I didn’t want people to know it’s me. I have been the only person doing my particular sub speciality line of work on this forum for as long as I have been a member!
There are some great ideas here and it depends on what you want to see.
As jimatbeyond suggested the central coast is spectacular as is Yosemite but it depends on what you want to see and do. There are loads of things to see in Southern California - LA, San Diego, Palm Springs/joshua tree. For national parks, I would check the reservations required also.
The other consideration is traffic depending on where you are and when you are going.
I should have clarified that I was talking about $$$$$$$$ that could have to be spent if they didn’t have a travel insurance policy and something were to happen while here. Not talking about care levels at all.
That I 100% agree on.
As the others have said… Minivan for your transportation.
As far what to do with your time. You should let us know what you like to do as a family
California is a BIG Place with lots to do. Cheesy Hollywood stuff should be the Universal Studios theme park (Hollywood Blvd walk of fame is not good at best). Disney (Disney is well Disney) and Magic Mtn. (Best for Roller Coaster but it will be hot AF and crowded in July). Round out the theme parks.
Now lets talk about what you want to do.
- Sit around a hotel and a pool like regular people? The theme park hotels and Vegas hotels can provide that. If you are on Slowtwitch, I think you probably want more activity.
- If you go up to No Cal a couple of days in Tahoe or the Eastern Sierra could be fun for activities.
- So Cal has mtns and the desert as well
- Vegas with teenagers will be expensive and suck. You can’t do much with them and they can’t do much with you other than walk up and down the strip. Individually they are too young, and you are too old.
- Tourist towns up and down the coast (Monterrey, Solvang etc.)
- PCH between Santa Monica and Malibu is destroyed from the recent fire. So you can remove that from any list. Although some of the trails in SM Mtns have reopened.
- Stay away from Newport and Laguna SUPER crowded and expensive in my opinion with few options other than crowded and overpriced.
I am currently at the south rim village of the Grand Canyon. It is truly grand and amazing.
We also visited the west rim. The Skybridge is really cool. However it will be expensive for a family to visit, $86 for adults.
If you get the chance to visit the Grand Canyon do it. It truly is one of the natural wonders of the world.
The Hoover Dam tour is interesting if you have the time.
The Red Rock Canyon drive, which is just outside Vegas is spectacular.
Visit the Fremont Casino area in Vegas. We enjoyed the vibe more than the Vegas strip area.
