Americans in the TDF - why so few?

Out of 189 riders (if I counted correctly) why only 6 American’s? No other American pro’s good enough for the 21 teams?

Levi Leipheimer (USA) Discovery George Hincapie (USA) Discovery Chris Horner (USA) Lotto Christian Vande Velde CSC (USA) Fred Rodriguez (USA) Lotto DNF Stage 15 - out David Zabriski (USA) CSC Time cut Stage Stage 11 -out

Americans Say No to Drugs.

That doesn’t surprise me. The percentage of Americans that cycle is very small. What I can’t figure is why there are no (black) African or Chinese teams.

Or more so, why no Japanese teams? Seems like there are world class riders and the potential for plenty of sponsorship.

You forgot pink text.

All the other Americans are too busy racing NASCAR!

WHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW!!!

There are only 15 American riders on Pro Tour teams. 6 of 15 is a pretty good percentage, I’d say. Besides, there are good reasons the other 9 aren’t in the Tour:
Raisin - recovering from brain injury Farrar - relatively inexperienced and not really a Tour rider yet at this point in his career Olson - not strong enough to make T-Mobile’s Tour team McCartney, Cruz - no way they could make the Discovery team this year Danielson - temtatively scheduled for the Tour this year but had recurring stomach issues Julich - didn’t have the form to make the CSC Tour team this year Devine - very inexperienced at this level(just signed) Trenti - holds a US passport but doesn’t even speak English - he didn’t make the Liquigas team

as someon else has already mentioned there just isnt the cycling culture or passion. I just got back from Italy where we were in a race with 4500 riders/racers, they have these types of racers every weekend. Here in BC you will be lucky to get a 100 racers total. The kids race was larger than our average race field here.

  1. The Chinese have a very small racing culture…it makes the US look like Belgium.

  2. Same thing in Africa.

Of a cycling nation, we only have 15 American riders on Pro tours? That is actually quite a surprise. Maybe we need Beckham to become a cyclist.

unless Levi does not finish tomorrow it will make 10 straight years that an American has been on the Podium at the Tour

Americans Say No to Drugs.

thats not true,Floyd Landis is an american isn´t he?
Lots of american athetlets have been testing positive
But you are not alone

That’s a lot more than when I was racing, it was one, Boyer…He’s the guy who at 50 just won the race across america…Not sure about his exact place, but I think it was 16th or so…

Very few riders, but if you take the top 3 from each country and make them a team, then they do pretty good overall…In any big race, you will find that the home country(Europe in this case) will have a lot more competitors. Look at the tour of California, and there are a lot more Americans…IF they moved Hawaii to Germany, I can just imagine the massive German field there…

I think he was being fictitious ;-),

or at least I hope so.
