American Classic Wheels - Comments

Looking at a new bike that has these as an option. What are the goods and others on these wheels?

Check if they changed the freehub design. The last few years it’s been pretty weak. Check rec.bicycles.tech. Lots of unhappy owners.

Really fast, very light and strong. I race on carbons and train on the 420 aluminum clinchers. I’ve been using them for three years and never had any problems. They put a lot of effort into getting them extremely true.

Just curious, do you find the aluminum clinchers stay true and can be used for general training? Or are they a little delicate at that weight?

I only have about 1000 miles on the aluminum, haven’t had to true them yet. I have several thousand on the carbons.

Just finished a road race on my AM Classic 58 mm carbons (a Zipp 404 rim laced to AM Classic hubs). I’ve had them for 2 years and every time I use them I’m blown away. The fxckers seriously feel like they accelerate on their own above about 25-26 mph.

I also notice that, when riding in a peloton, I pedal about 1/2 as much as everyone else. Seriously. Can’t explain it, but I really like it.

Best part is that I bought 'em used on Ebay for $560.

I had to replace the rear axle last week because I noticed a hairline fracture forming. Apparently this happened with a few batches of the older axles (mine are probably 3 years old). AM Classic sent a new axle out for free. Top-notch service to boot.

I also bought a pair of new AM Classic Sprint 350s. I’ve only used them a few times this year, but so far I like what I feel.

I have a sent of 350 since November. No problems with the hub they are true. Nice light wheels-- the 420 are nice wheels too.
