Amanda Stevens - Di2 Failure

Her facebook post “Kona: What a day! First of all: Congrats to Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae on a stunning performance, my other Team Sirius teammates: Jodie Swallow and Mary Beth Ellis for great days, and to all the other women racing so hard. The island had other plans for me as my Di2 shifting shorted out around mile 30 and I was stuck in one gear for the remaining 82miles. I did my best to stay positive and stay in the game, but my day continued to unravel from there. Small things really add up and at the end of the day, I was not able to pull out the performance I am capable of. The past two days have been a roller coaster of emotion, but at the end of it all: I will live to see another day and am excited to have been here and to be a part of this awesome event. Onwards!”

That’s just brutal. She’s awesome for continuing the race even though she had a bike failure. Anyone else ever had that happen?

I would like to know what the root cause for the failure was. If it was a dead battery then that is user error but highly unlikely given the long battery life. This leaves (a, less likely) discrete component failure at a junction box, deraileur, or shifter or (b, more likely) e-tube wire disconnection/connection issue. It is also unlikely the rear deraileur entered crash mode during a ride.

Yup. Happened to a female rider on the local ‘pro’ ride 4-6 weeks ago. She got stuck in 39/17ish, and went off the back pretty quickly (she’s a multiple time national champ, but you can only spin so fast!). Pretty good gear to SS it in, really. I wonder where Stevens got stuck?

Saw it happen to one of the girls guest riding for FCS mid TT, but that was 1st gen Di2

and of course it happens any time you let the battery die
