who could give a rat’s ass about iphones, blackburys, cell phones, texting whatever. Hell, I hate the regular phone, let alone my cell. I have never text messaged, taken a picture with a phone and have no desire. The only reason I have a cell phone is for emergencies. The only reason I want to talk on any phone is to relay information (i.e. setting a date and time to actually meet in person), not to have a conversation. I love to actually talk in person and am very social. When I’m in my car, outside, or generally by myself, I prefer not to be able to be contacted. (Again, unless it’s an emergency). Actually, I even prefer email to phone calls.
You are not alone, but you are probably old like me…THis is a generational thing. I saw an 11 year old girl at the swapmeet this weekend, non english speaking, and working that phone like Motzart at a piano… I still have trouble figuring out how to put people into my address book…
My wife and I were the last people over the age of 11 in New Jersey to get a cell phone (and we have exactly one). Wanted it for those times when we needed to contact one another about child stuff, mainly. I must say it has come in quite handy while trying to sell my house, but I can’t stand it for actually talking to someone.
Could you do yourself a favor and change your login? We’ve had issues with guys with “frank” in their name (ajfranke, Frank Day) on the various slowtwitch forums. Seeing that might bring on a knee-jerk reaction in some.
I think you’re right and yes, I am of an older generation. (I refuse to call myself old though.) I work on a Univ campus and as soon as the students get out of class they get on their cell. What the hell is so important? My guess: nothing. From what I overhear every once in a while it’s more of a “this-is-what-I’m-doing-right-now-in-real-time-this-very-moment- what-about-you” kind of dialog. "hey. just got out of class. math. I dunno. walking to my car gonna get some lunch. I dunno. where you at? yeah. cool… " A lot of that. Why?
That’s exactly what I’m hearing too, people living in real time on the phone. THe younger generation has no clue that you can live outside of the net, and real time communications. It is just their thing, I hope it works out for them. I don’t like it, but not too long ago, a generation felt the same about TV/ radio and telephones…Perhaps they will need all these skills to be sucessfull in their future. Unless of course global warming sends us back to the dark ages, then some of the old farts that live with nature, will be back in demand…
As a result of video games/computer/Ipod’s kids need constant stimulation now. Any blank space in their day needs to be filled with something and the mobile phone is generally the answer. You and I might enjoy sitting outside watching the sunset. To them it is torture. There is also the excessive need to talk nowadays. The radio, the TV, the cell phones…when I am away from talking it is like bliss.
I think I fall in the middle of the old/young discussion (I’m 31). I can’t stand cell phones, never have sent a text, can’t take pictures with my phone. The only reason I have one is to communicate with my wife and half the time she gets upset with me because it is not on or I don’t answer. I’m all about silence (especially with a 3 yo and a 5 week old)…
We have one cell phone which we got last year for when someone goes out on the road on a trip. Hotel charges are a rip.
I’m giving it to my daughter this morning so that she can plug in so more phone numbers for me. I know how to do it, but I’m lazy, and she loves that kind of stuff.
I’m the same way, rarely use my cellphone except when travelling for work. No camera in the phone and if it had one, I’d have no idea how to use it. I have never sent a text message, don’t know how, and don’t feel the need to learn. I did get an iPod Shuffle in the past few months and it’s great for trainer rides and for whenever I have to run on a treadmill, but I also like that is pretty basic and doesn’t have all the extra stuff that I probably wouldn’t use anyway.
I must have gotten this from my dad - he’s 81 and has never used an ATM card or computer in his life since he figures he made it this far without it.
I agree, except that I don’t even own a cell phone. I am thinking about getting one for emergencies, though–in particular to carry in a Bento box during long bike rides.
Wait a minute, a guy posts to bitch about these newfangled communication methods and gadgets, and yet drops an “LOL” on us in the same thread?
That kind of language could get a man banned from the Rotary Club meetings, Frank.
What’s even more amusing is that he posted this “rant” on an internet message board that is basically just a series of text messages to the world. How’s that dislike of technology work again?
Alright alright. Settle down tiger. I didn’t say I didn’t like technology. Just phones and their offspring. As I said - I do enjoy email. I also like online forums. By the way (or, BTW) aren’t all posts on an online forum “a series of text messages to the world”?
