Am I realistic ? Goal Question

I did a bunch of triathlons etc when I was younger ( 16, 17 years old ) but then didn’t do much sport over the years apart from a bit of hillwalking. I have a fairly inactive desk job although I am self employed. I started running again 4/5 years ago and did a few 5k races including a 23:12 ( my 5k in younger days were sub 20 mins ) but got injured after a few months. I recently started MAF and am enjoying it. I started walking mid/end of June and jogging end June. I try for 2 or 3 times per week. I did a 50 minute MAF session this evening, not including warm up and cool down, and was pleased with my pace ( although I’d still like to run faster but that will come as my aerobic ability increaes ).

Anyhow the 5K that I ran 23:12 at is on at start of September. Would it be too early to run this ? There are a few 4 milers in Nov & Dec which I defo want to use as speed training as I will have done MAF for four months by then.

I plan to do a duathlon series in early 2010 - they are 3.8K run - 18K ride - 3.8K run each - 2 in February and 1 in March.

Then there’s a marathon here in first week of June…which I am thinking I may attempt

There’s also a 180K cycle in July which I’d like to do as well.

Am I thinking too big in the time available ?

Looking forward to your responses.

BTW I am now 37 and will be 38 in December.

What’s MAF?

The distances you’re talking about seem achievable in the time frame you’re thinking. With the exception of the marathon, none of these distances seems enough to cause injury with insufficient training, unless you run too hard for your fitness at the time. A marathon by June is also doable, assuming you train up to it.

Good luck!

as to the 180 cycling event… you did not indicate in your post whether you current ride. You can certainly prepare for a ride that long in a year, but be sure to prepare.

you are wondering if your mass air flow sensor is going to work in september?

Thanks for your replies.

MAF is basically aerobic training which is calculated as: 180 less age adjusted for your current level of fitness = heart beat at which not to train over. You go painfully, or should that be painlessly, slow at first but you speed up as your aerobic capability improves. You train like this for 3-4 months before introducing speed work/intervals etc. Longer if you are starting out or if your times don’t slow. That’s why I was asking about the 5K - I’d love to do it but think it’s a little too early.

I currently don’t bike but have an order in for 2 secondhand bikes at a local shop - a hybrid, so that I can have my son on the back, and a racer for duathlons and long rides.

Re MAF just read this:

I had my fastest run last night and also my longest ( 50 mins ). Not sure of the distance but I feel good this morning. :O)
