So my mouth wrote a cheque my body has to cash soon. There’s a half-IM type event happening near my city and I committed to doing it. I think it’s 2.5km swim, 100km cycle, 25km run.
I swopped to Duathlons (10/40/5) events after 8yrs of competitive cycling, and do about 12-14hrs cycling and 3hrs running a week. Cycling is still my main love and the running a nice complement to it.
Problem, I last swam any decent length about 8yrs ago. I know I can easily do the cycle, I can manage the run without dying, but the swim is something new.
What sort of amount of swimming do I need to do for the next 3 months if I am to survive the 2.5km swim? (note, I don’t mind open water and wetsuits…scuba-dived for years before cycling).
Any advice, or should I just order the tombstone now
Yup, big lake where you can run ski-boats and sail etc on normal days. Open water, wetsuits almost gaurenteed.
Oh and the event is mid December (which is summer here)
Seriously, how much swimming do I need to do (indoor and outdoor)?
You’ve probably got a lot of work to do but it can be done.
12 weeks is a still a fair amount of time to work on your swim if you can allready do laps.
Get in the pool now and figure out what you can do. If you can do 100’s comfortably that’s great…do a lot of them…start off with 30 minutes worth of them. Build up to 1 hour’s worth up to 3 times a week. If you have access to open water swim 45 min there once a week too. If you don’t have access to open water do some longer sets in the pool, something like 500’s or 1000’s, about 1 hour’s worth of swimming.
If you can’t do 100’s comfortably, get a coach or knowledgeable friend that can get you there…start today…don’t waste time.
its pretty individual.
i did my first HIM on no swimming at all.
really none
and I was MOP
but im tall and skinny and at the time my stroke was only 75% awful
oh yeah, also my shoulders/arms were a wreck afterwards on the bike, heh.

swim a lot with the pull buoy then. It makes it a lot easier to train hard with a pull buoy. And a pull buoy simulates wetsuit swimming a little bit. You will probably improve technique a little less with a lot of pull buoy swimming, but technique is not so important in a wetsuit.
