Crossing yellow line: I assume that would be the center line - a serious infraction in that it is a serious safety issue. He deserved a penalty pursuant to the rules;
No race number on back: Is that really a rule? That one doesn’t bother me too much - it’s probably a courtesy to the photographers who will try to sell your dear old classmate a picture that he can use to brag to everyone from your home town that he is an “ironman” (who, by the way, smoked kac94!!!);
Outside assistance for the run pacer: I know this is technically a violation and if everyone did it, there would be chaos and safety issues, etc. However, once you get into MOP/BOP, I think it’s o.k. to be a bit more lenient. These folks aren’t going to take anyone’s prize money or kona slot. They’re there to mark off another item on the ol’ life list. Having said that, 6 miles goes way beyond what I would find acceptable (i.e. a spouse walk/jogging along for a couple minutes in the late stages of the marathon).
Was this the same guy who stole your girlfriend sophomore year? If so, get a mailing list from the alumni office and we’ll start a letter writing campaign condemning him as a blatant cheater! Otherwise, congratulate him on his finish and let him take from his ironman experience what he will.
Gee I dunno: did he “intend” to break the rule? If not, no penalty. Since he didn’t “intend” break a traffic law or possibly endanger himself, no penalty. Since he didn’t “intend” to gain an advantage over the poor slugs who didn’t have anyone to run with, well, it’s probably okay.
Hope his buddy didn’t drink the last of the regular coke, I heard they ran out.

interesting - this one bothers me more than most any other infraction. Spectators don’t know what they are doing when on the course when they start pacing…they get in your way, block aid stations, confuse volunteers, etc. They also tend top be more unpredictable. Further, there is an awful big crowd in the 12.30 range so it may even be a bigger issue for MOP. I really encourage folks not to do this
uhm, no offense, but i think your emotions are jealousy or some other unhealthy feelings.
keep your eyes on your own self, and don’t worry about others. the more you think about what this guy did, the less you’re thinking about what your own self is doing.
do yourself a favor and let it go. race your own race. keep your eyes and thoughts in your head. this will prevent the little shit like this from bothering you.

Look at results there were 8 kona spots over 12 hours. Last one was 15:58 so outside assistance does count for bop,mop at least for the older age groups…

I’d love to stick it to most of the dickheads I went to high school with too (even the ones that were my “buddies”) but I’d agree and say you need to let this go. Unless… you didn’t just graduate from high school a few years ago did you? If you’ve been out ten years or more, I guarantee you have more important things to be letting you keep yourself up at night about.
And not to highjack the thread but is it wrong to cross the center line when some slowass in front of you is blocking? I mean, if no one else is using the road, why shouldn’t I? I do it in a car too on certain occasions?
I have a few things to say as any brother would:
First, whatever time penalty you would give him, he would still have crushed your time. I needed to get that off my chest.
Second, I want to tell you a story. It is a story about two brothers who set out on a quest, together, to finish the Ironman. One of the brothers, half way through training, herniated two discs in his back. Devastated, the Injured Brother stopped his training while the other brother kept on going – day, night, morning of relentless training. On race day, the Injured Brother, although upset that he couldn’t race (not jealous or envious), was ecstatic for his healthy brother who was ready for battle. He worked harder than ever before and took his mind and body to levels neither brother ever thought possible. This was a day of pain, but also of immense joy and pride for both brothers. The day was filled with intense emotions as one brother suffered physically and the other brother yelled, cheered, took pictures, prepared his water bottles, and did everything he could (I guess not by the book in all cases) to get his brother to the finish line. Isn’t that what brotherly love is all about? Meeting the brother at mile 18 seemed like a wonderful idea to cheer him on, run in front of him yelling things like, “Strength and honor, you are a champ, fight through the pain, you own this course, etc. etc.” Why does anyone else care that one of the brothers was there to cheer the other brother on? Isn’t that what life is all about? To encourage each other and make sacrifices for each other in times of intense suffering. The brothers are not sorry for not being Ironman purists if there is such a thing. Maybe the Angry One will feel better if the Healthy Brother is disqualified from the race, so he doesn’t have to feel so bad about some other deep-seated issue. I really don’t know or care about his motives. What I do know is that the Angry One has some serious demons and needs to focus on himself and not others. How the brothers decided to finish the Ironman is their business as it affected NO ONE else’s right to be an Ironman and achieve greatness. If it makes you feel better, tack on 10 minutes onto the time and his blended time would be 12:40 or 12:45. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that your post is distasteful and pisses on the accomplishment of a true champion. I guess this is how Lance feels when the press tries to take away from his great accomplishments. Nevertheless, the Angry One just solidified for the Injured Brother that the Healthy Brother was Lance Armstrong for a day and achieved absolute greatness.
One last point about the race growing in popularity. Isn’t this a good thing? I wish everyone could accomplish something so great. Is this accomplishment something you would like to hoard for a select group of people? Wow, that sounds scary. Finally, I want to say that in our training and our racing, do we “enhance” our performance by buying faster bikes and wheels, eating certain nutritional foods and taking nutritional substances, getting good coaches, etc.? We do whatever we can before the race and during the race to achieve greatness for ourselves, our families and the people who love us and we love. So did the brother’s ruin the sanctity of the Ironman? Did you really write this? I think the Healthy Brother missed the Kona cut off by about 2.5 hours. I hope everyone has someone out there caring for them and picking them up when they need it the most. I actually don’t think you are a jealous prick, I just feel sorry for you.
Well, I am far from an IM athlete. But I sure think spectators running onto a feild of play is not a really good idea. Yell, shout, scream from off the course fine, but to go out on the track and run with someone for 1 mile even seems like a bad idea. I suck on the swim, can someone come out in flippers and chear me on, how about if I have people at the bottom of each hill on the bike to push me up the hill?
Sorry I’m kind of a black and white guy and the field of play is for participants and officials, not spectators. I dont care there motive.
Yeah, door #1 …and sometimes the person in the race cant control what their support teams do…like he said “come run with me”?
let it go - these are small things - the guy is a MOPer the infractions are inconsequential (sp)
IMO the spirit of IM is not the single day but everything leading up to the day, the day its self and then how you live afterwards - again the infractions are way minor
