Does any one here have any experience with the Altra instinct 1.5’s and marathon distance training. I am starting a ironman 70.3 and then soon after ramping the miles up to a marathon for the end of the year. Do you think the Instinct 1.5’s are safe for that amount of miles.
I currently run in the Saucony Progrid Guide 6 and havent had any issues in these. These are 8mm drop compared to the 0mm drop in the Altras which will take some time getting used to. As far as cushion and control will the Instincts be a big change at these kind of miles.
8mm to Zero drop is a pretty big jump. I was running in Newtons w/ a 2mm and 3mm drop (Distance and Gravity) when I switched to the Altras (3-Sum/Instinct1.5/LonePeak1.5). That really wasn’t a big jump for me but I still alternated a bit until I was comfortable in the mid-longer distance runs. A girl used to run with went from a 10mm to 3-4mm drop and it definitely took a toll on her feet. If you are going to make the switch, definitely take your time with them and use the different insoles (3mm & 5mm) to work your way into the different drop.
I’ve put about 500 miles on mine since Sept, w/ most of November off and will probably order 2 pairs soon to replace mine. The mesh tends to rip on them but doesn’t impact the performance of the shoes.
Do you think that once I get comfortable with the zero drop that the amount of cushioning and stability is ok for long distance runs? Perhaps the torins are a better fit?

I’m no expert, but I was up to 45+mpw in them before I rolled my ankle in late Oct (not running related). I was following BarryP’s plan pretty closely so my legs were sore, but nothing terrible. Now I’m just sticking to between 35-40mpw for the next few months while I increase my bike mileage…
I appreciate your advice, I think I can work my way into them as long as I am careful. I have a pair of Nike Free 3.0+ that I enjoy running short distances in but my problem with them is the side to side support is minimal. I find my knees and it band start to bother me. The frees are pretty much zero drop so I think I can manage to get into the altras without much issue. I’ll have to give em a try if I find the lone peaks to work for me. Thanks again
