Alternatives to Stupid Profile Yellow Mesh

Anyone come up with creative alternatives to the stupid profile mesh? It’s driving me crazy!! Preferably something that’s refillable on the go.

Get the sponge that the jetstream bottle uses. Fits perfectly in the profile bottle and works great.

Anything special about the jetstream sponge, or would a normal big fat sponge cut to size work too?

I tossed the yellow mesh and put one of those net body wash things in. Not sure what they’re actually called but you can find them by the body wash liquid soaps at drugs stores, etc. It doesn’t come unraveled, is fairly compact (get one of the smaller ones - the big ones take up too much space), nothing comes splashing out onto the bike, and you can loop the hanging strap around the straw to make sure it doesn’t get pushed into the bottle.

No, nothing special about it besides it already shaped for a nice fit. I guess you could cut your own foam piece to fit. I’m just lazy and since it only costs a few bucks…

I second, third, and fourth the jetstream sponge. I use it, and recommended it to two friends. Fits perfect and never had any problems spilling. I’m not sure you can find foam as thick as it is, and still get it as cheap

any ideas on an alternative for a straw?

the body wash sponge is a good idea.

for what its worth, i use a jet stream sponge as well.

Strangely enough, I have it on my list to get one of those shower net things on my grocery shop. The sponge that I had in my Jetstream (which I stupidly chucked!) was quite a coarse foam of which I can’t think where there is an application. Hopefully, there is someome out there there can put us out of our misery.

I just use the profile straw that came with it…I lost it once, and had a straw from some stupid amusment park souviener cup, and used that for a while. Didn’t like it as much as the two piece one from profile, so I bought another one of those.

have you tried unravelling the mesh and turning it inside out ? I was on the verge of getting a sponge, but doing this has made the mesh perform significantly better, enough so that I haven’t bothered with replacing it.

That sponge has to be a bacteria breeding ground. Perfect for growing all kinds of nasty stuff.

In addition to the rolled up mesh piece, I put a strip of duct on each side (4 pieces) making the opening about 1/4 inch square so I can still fill the bottle using a water bottle with ease. Prevents sloshing very well.

Cheers, Karma

Why do you still need the mesh then?

Mine works fine… I just unrolled the yellow thingy and loosely wadded it up and loosely stuffed it back into the bottle… been using a profile bottle for about 15 yrs. If you unfold and loosely stuff it back in the bottle, it will work much better.

Why doesn’t anybody just buy and use the jetstream bottle? I bought mine specifically because of all the bitching about the profile bottle I heard on ST, works great no complaints. Duh.

Mine has worked perfectly for the 10 years or so that I’ve had it, so I’ve never understood the whingeing about them. I sent a package of mesh scrubber things to NZ, sounds like they’ll work fine as a replacement. I’ve never worried about bacteria or anything building up in the original mesh, but I’ve always washed it out after I’ve used it. Maybe there are some organisms attached, but what I can’t see doesn’t bother me :-). Try the pot scrubber thingies, found them in the supermarket.

Cheers

Microwave it!

I use a lit from an empty bottle of vitamins that fits very snuggly inside the opening. I poked a few very small holes in it so it doesn’t create suction. It easy to remove and fits well. Nonetheless , I can’t believe PD hasn’t come out with some sort of alternative to the yellow sponge thing. Some of the comments here make we want to take the Jetstream for a spin…
