I have reviewed the other threads on the Atlanta area….this one is specific to Alpharetta and the surrounding areas. May be faced with moving to the area….office would be in Alpharetta. Can any locals make some recommendations on where I should look to live.
Home Price: $350 - $650k
Schools: Good or Private (kids in faith based private now)
Yard size big enough for recreational pool
Silver Comet trail sounds great for long rides and runs….no idea where it is or what access to it from the Alpharetta area is like.
Good pool/natatorium…preferably not a 25 yard YMCA 4 foot deep number.
Can someone point me to a few parts of town/neighborhoods so I can look around the internet?
For that price range you can stay right around Alpharetta. Anywhere in East Cobb will be nice with pretty solid public schools and lots of good private schools. Alpharetta, Roswell, Cumming are all good upper middle class cities. You cant really go wrong with anything North of Buckhead and around Alpharetta. I live in the perimeter, but I make it up there pretty frequently.
Not sure where in Alpha you are looking but check out Glen Abbey. Great community and in a very good school district. The green way is just around the corner from the sub division. Also, the city of Johns Creek is good and holds its value. Schools in Johns Creek a rated 9s-10s.
As previous poster said East Cobb is probably what you want. Schools seem to be better or so I’ve heard. If you want more land you could probably go up 400 a bit towards cumming and get bigger lot, bigger house for the money and have a little bit of a commute that might not be too terrible only having to get to Alpharetta
I have to admitt that I am jealous. I lived in Alpharette for like 3 years and it was by far the best time I ever had.
Forsyth or Fulton County are within the 20st richest counties in the us. This is reflected by the Alpharetta Tennis Moms who spend their husbands entire income in plastic surgery…with success! There are tons of good bars to hang out at night. Back in my time we used to go to Tara Humata on North Point Prkwy on wednesdays…
There is a big triathlon scene in Alpharetta basicly every car on the parking lot of the lifetime fitness has a sticker with 26.2 or ironman on it. The lifetime fitness holds two descent group rides, spinn classes and masters swim classes. Another very good group ride was on tuesday nights hosted from a bike shop called reality bikes. That has always been a huge crowed and the A ride was pretty fast. You do have the Alpharetta greenway which is perfect for running and “All 3 sports” is pretty close, too. Another big plus is Lake Lanier which is perfect for open water swimming. Than there are the North Georgia Mountains, tons of good rides there like the 6 gaps for instance.
So If you want to stay close to Alphretta than look for something close to the Golf Club of Georgia, basically every neighbourhood around lake windward is perfect. Otherwise try to move as close to lake lanier as possible.
Public schools are all rated 9 to 10 as mentioned here before
We live in north Alpharetta. Though our address is Alpharetta we are actually in Forsyth rather than Fulton county. Which means a savings in taxes, at least for now as Forsyth is taking off and has great schools. And our neighborhood has its own private access to the greenway in Cumming. Checkout the McFarland road area. You can get into the backside of Windward area with quick access to 400 and a greenway entrance close by.
My advice would be to stay away from anything in the Haynes Bridge or Old Alabama area in Alpharetta. You will find lots of really nice neighborhoods and access to the greenway. But the place is a parking lot at rush hour. So you’ll lose a lot of training and more importantly family time.
As was said there are lots of group rides around. If you can find what you want around the Campground road area in Cumming that would be good for riding. Most of the rides wind up going through there.
The silver comet is where I really like to do my training on the tri bike. It goes on forever and once you get away from the kids and walkers it’s smooth sailing. It is roughly a half hour car ride from Alpharetta.
Despite what the other poster said I would avoid Tara Humata like the plague. Nothing good can come of going there. Because they have the BEST margarita around. Don’t want to know, but there must be like 3,000 calories in them. I’m surprised they don’t give you the first one free.
I lived in Alpharetta for close to 7 years. Great area.
As everyone has said, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell all are great areas with good schools that you can easily find something in your budget.
Big Creek Greenway is great for running, terrible for biking(too many dog walkers, rollerbladers, and kids) just don’t do it. You can ride out on North Point Parkway early on the weekends to get you out to places north of town which are where the better rides take place.
Silver Comet is good for long, pretty/very flat rides and only about 30 minutes from Alpharetta. That’s 30 minutes on a weekend no traffic, if you tried to head over there after work your looking at least 1 hour. Columns Drive is not to far 15 to 20 minutes and great for pancake flat interval or brick workouts. All3Sports is just south of Alpharetta off of 400, TheSportFactory is just on the Roswell side of Alpharetta, and Roswell Bikes is also over there.
