Almost got hit by a car today while running on a sidewalk

There was a new stretch of road and I was running on the sidewalk. I was approaching a road work ahead sign that was partially on the sidewalk blocking my view of the road when I heard what sounded like a gunshot and a crash, the sign started moving towards me and fell 10 feet in front of me. A car careened out the corner of my eye. I turned around as he sped off with his tire shredding. I gave chase and the light about a 1/3 of a mile held him there so I could snap a few photos and get close to his window. I held “you almost hit me you son of a bitch” and he sped off. Tire shredded with the rim making noise and all. I didn’t bother chasing him this time.

Man, I got a rush out of that, but that was a close call. 10 more feet and I would have been dead. That is a 45 MPH road.

Oh, then it started raining when I got back to change and a lightening bolt hit a tree 50 yards from my car after I got into it.

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.

If that were me I wouldnt even bother trying to buy a lottery ticket for fear of dying on the way there.

Yeesh!

Were you running without a shirt on? That sort of thing happens to me all the time when I let the pecs out to get some sun. Neither man nor nature can handle the awesome.

Let’s see those pictures!

I’ll post if I can figure out how to put it on here from my phone.

No, but I was wearing a bright green fluorescent colored shirt that should have been visible. Probably texting while driving. Nobody just hits a curb like that.

The sign.

The punk after I caught up to him at the light. That is part of his tire on the road.

Ok fixed it.

sun’s out, guns out

And when in doubt whip it out. You know your guns. What were you thinking.

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. Got caught in the first rain in a few weeks on a long ride, and it was slippery as hell on the road. I had not one, not two, but THREE car accidents happen right in front of me in three separate instances around 20 minutes apart. By the third one I just said “screw it” and rode home (very cautiously).

By the way, your pictures didn’t work.

but doesn’t distract the wimmens one bit?

 <---- inserted in case the attempt at humor was missed.

I was hit by a lightening bolt once. It was of the “cutting back on beer” variety.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago when I was on a long run on sidewalks. I crossed a side street and was about 10 yds past the corner when I heard a vehicle reving its engine and spinning its wheels. I turned just in time to see a mini-van pull out in front of a SUV causing the SUV to lock up and skid directly towards me at about 45 mph. I jumped toward the street to avoid the SUV and it hooked when it hit the curb at the corner and crashed into a brick wall/planter that the subdivision placed to mark the entrance to the neighborhood. The mini-van kept on going and was never in a position that I could see a license plate. The SUV hit hard enough to displace the engine and destroy the cooling system, the driver and two small boys who were on their way to a soccer game were not injured but all of them were pretty shook up.

Me, I didn’t really think a lot about the vehicle heading straight at me, I just planned on jumping up onto the hood and rolling off should it keep coming my way. Fortunately for me, I did not need to do that. Unfortunately for the driver of the SUV, the brick wall was a lot less forgiving than a 185 lb runner who might have hit his windshield hard enough to break the window.

Almost, I worked for a federal law enforcement agency on the border and in the process I was forced to do the hood roll a couple of times in various situations. I didn’t have a partner nearlly as attractive as Heather Locklear, but it was a very interesting job to have.

Your post reminded me if that movie showtime. Where Eddie murphy and deniro are coached by shatter on how to be cops.

One of my best lifeguard friends took up triathlon late in life, and on one morning run with virtually no one on the road, he got hit by a delivery truck and killed instantly. One of those things we all do all the time, little alley with tall buildings blocking the view and this truck just blew the stop sign thinking it is 5;30am on a weekend and he was in a hurry.

Be careful out there people, like that bike race we watched yesterday, keep vigilant all the time when any possibility exists that cars could be around. Glad you were safe, you are probably still metabolizing some of that adrenaline.

Adrenaline is my life blood. I’m not chemically balanced to begin with which if you read the LR regularly you might have known. So I seek out adrenaline, just so I can feel normal.
