I don’t know who Sarah Story is, Jude Bellingham is probably the biggest name (plays for Real Madrid, Worlds biggest football club who won the European Champions League) probably the most undeserving from the list.
Actually surprised Tom Pidcock didn’t make the shortlist.
Sarah Storey is a Paralympic cyclist won multiple medals.
Luke Littler is a 17/18 yo darts sensation who had a 2024 breakout year.
Jude Bellingham is an over paid drama queen aka football
Keely Hodgkinson is 800m gold medalist undefeated all year
Joe Root is a cricketer but don’t know anything about him
Alex Yee is a legend
Most British thing I have ever seen. A darts thrower challenging a middle distance runner (most competitive sport in athletics probably, and maybe throughout the entire spectrum of sports) and footballer (most popular) for athlete of the year!
If Athing Mu qualified for the Olympics and Keely Hodgkinson still won, then the award should be hers hands down. It’s not her fault that the defending champ wasn’t there. You can only run against who shows up. But she didn’t break a record nor ran a PB. The race wasn’t tactical at all since she was in front the entire time. It wasn’t quite a Rudisha-esque 2012 performance though not many are. Add the fact that she didn’t race after the games. The narrative of winning gold after being a bridesmaid in Tokyo, Commwealth games in 22, world champs in 22 and 23 is just too powerful. Helps that she’s a stunner too.
On a pure performance standpoint, Alex had a complete performance after swimming near the front, even taking some turns on the bike, and unleashing that run. He also beat the defending champ, a rival, and a solid French team who had been game planning against him for the past two years. Add the bronze from the relay and the world title and that’s a year for sportsman.
She broke the UK and European record during her Olympic prep in May/June. She focused on one goal which was to win Gold - which she did. She was undefeated in 800s all year and intimidated every 800 she raced.
Early season was 400s to get faster (having had a knee injury) and everything else was Olympic gold. Mo didn’t qualify simple but I think Keely would have won anyway. My wife did some volunteer coaching with Trevor and the guy is just incredible.
She tore her hamstring not long after the games and it was end of season. She didn’t hide away from anyone.
Not trying to diminish her tremendous achievement. Rooted for her to win in Paris after all the runner up finishes in global championships. She’s deserving of the award for sure. The award after all is for the sporting achievement that has captured the British public’s imagination the most. Just making a case for why it should go to Yee.
I wait for @marcag to chime in with “he’s doomed and will never win another short course race again”.
The Olympic Q standard (UK) is 2:08:10 and only 3 Brits achieved that in 2024 and only one athlete in 2023.
@monty further to the quick reply above, it’s really worth a look at Sarah Storey’s Wikipedia page to understand what an incredible sporting career she has had!
Well it will be interesting to see how he does. I give him a better chance than Gwen. He has a better run background if you look at his run achievements when he was young. Also, he’s not leaving triathlon, still going to maintain some swimming and biking. I think Gwen just quit everything except rumning
I would say why either series
To be really financily useful
You have to finish top 3
So depending on on your bonus structures which seems to be more ironman loaded you have a better chance to cherry pick smaller races and make money with appearances fees
And depending what you can get for rorh as appearance fee it could work out best not do do any series do a few smaller races
A d then focus on a few wildcards for PTO 100 and an ironman race that gives you 5 percent bonus points and focus on the PTO yearly bonus
And of course you also need to think if you focus on a series how does that impact your duration of your career
