The second lottery drawing for the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon is this Sunday, February 1st. This is my first time entering the Alcatraz lottery and my third attempt at Kona which is coming up in April. How many other Slow Twitchers have entered these lotteries? Tim
Got into to Alcatraz on first attempt, rejected on second, and rejected in first round this year. I’ve been rejected by Kona 4 or 5 times.
Got into Alcatraz the first try last year, No luck on Kona for 2008 try again for (2010?)
.
Got in to Alcatraz first crack last year. I’ve entered the Kona lottery 3 times so far with no luck. I’ll give it another shot this year before the Feb. deadline.
I’ve done Alcatraz twice, once got in on Lottery and the other on a very gracious VIP invite that I honestly didn’t merit but was certainly thankful for. I’m in the lottery for this year… fingers crossed!
So Tom, when are you going to get a really tricked out P4 and give us low down on it? Tim
We’ve had a couple P4’s in here that belong to Cervelo that have been circulated for photo shoots, etc. It’s nice. I actually rode one briefly. I’ll have mine when everyone else has theirs…
I saw one at Clearwater, but it was not a complete bike that could be ridden (the rear brake had not been made yet). While I like the wind tunnel data, I’m not all that crazy about trying to use that funky water bottle in real life. I also thought the plain Jane black color was rather lack luster in appearance. In any event, I am sure that the bike itself will be a strong performer for its new owener’s. However introducing a new high priced product that nobody really has to buy under the current economic cloud is likely to be a tough sell. I noticed that they have brought back the P1 at a very affordable price, so maybe those things will be economically successful even though the P4 is a much faster machine. Tim
Thanks for the reminder, just registered for the Alcatraz lottery… that race sounds awesome, gotta keep remembering to do the lottery every year
Well, this is the second thread I’ve successfully hijacked today…
Anyway. I see the rather low key paint livery of the P4 as a palette for a lot of cool stickers… I’m tricking mine out.
Back to the original question:
Alcatraz - selected once in 5 years of trying. Not drawn in December, so really REALLY hoping for Sunday.
Kona - Entered and not drawn for 4 years. It will be a huge shock if ever I am selected, but I doubt I ever will be. I’m just a hard working average person, not a B-list celebrity or some super inspiring story.
You raise an interesting question, and that is it a real random lottery or is it some kind of essay prize? In any other sort of lottery there are always posting’s about how many entries there are and what the chances are of a person winning the prize (in this case spending a ton of money, and not being given money). This whole lottery thing for Kona seems to lack transparency and it surely is a hugh money maker for the RED I M DOT folks.
My own opinion, which matters for nothing, is that the vast majority of the lottery is random. However, I also believe the management can and does select a few people based on less than random reasons. Otherwise, I find it truly amazing that random people who are profiled on NBC could randomly be selected again in subsequent years.
Applied for Kona 6-7 times, selected in '07.
Alcatraz = entered 2 times = nothing
Kona = entered 3 times = nothing
You would think my number would be up soon… April?
I got into Alcatraz the 1st time in 2006. I have tried Kona 4 times in the last 8 years and I have thrown out a total of $340 trying with no luck so far.
Is there some reason the lottery is not webcast each year? That would be great, and I know they have the technology because they webcast half or more of the races every year. Maybe there are not enough interested people to go to that expense? Not sure how much it costs to put it online. I know several people who are entered and I think it would be interesting to see it live.
Oh yeah, I forgot to add…I’m zero for three at the Kona Lottery myself.
For Alcatraz: Anyone have any idea how many they have left to draw on Sun? Or are all the spots they draw on Sun for those who got drawn in December but didn’t commit? Isn’t there a way to whore ourselves out to some corporate team? I want some of my bailout tax dollars back in the form of a race-entry.

Do the triathlons charge for these lottery entries?
Then do you have to pay for the race also?
If so I wonder how much they make on these for no extra expense for them.
I won a Kona lottery spot in 2008 on my first attempt. I definitely didn’t have an inspiring back story so I think it was just luck.
Never entered the Alcatraz lottery but if you miss out again and just want to be able to say you’ve done an Alcatraz triathlon there’s another one put on by EnviroSports. It’s a slightly different course but you still swim from the Rock and get to run up the infamous Sand Ladder. I did it in 2003 and thought the only down side was having to run both before and after the bike but it was a great experience.
