I know there’s already been a post on Alcatraz lodgings, but I have a new twist.
My cute-as-heck parents bought a trailer of some kind to travel through Alaska this summer. When I called them, elated, to let them know I was picked in the lottery for the race, they decided to incorporate it in their long drive. (This was after my mom’s repeated wails of, “Why won’t you just get married and have kids? Why more races?” - side note - does anyone else get that??)
Anyway…they will be pulling into the big city with some sort of large apparatus behind them and I’d like for them to be able to park it somewhere near the event, preferably near a hotel where I can stay, and not have to drive it around anymore. I think I read somewhere about an RV park nearby, but I’m not sure if that’s true and if they’ll need to make reservations, etc.
Hmmm, I stayed in a hotel in the Wharf district that was pretty expensive and honestly, not all that nice. In general, lodging there seemed rather pricey. The restaurants and shopping certainly offset that though. There were some great restaurants. Downtown shopping is among the best in the world, on par with London.
Gee, as I thing about it, I don’t recall the hotel I stayed in. Sorry…
I must admit, we don’t have an abundance of RV parks in SF. But let me look around, I am sure we can find something. If nothing else, right across the GG Bridge I am sure there are some RV spots. But there must be one or two here in the city. I;ll let you know.
Thanks for the info. Maybe they can find a place to park it and stay at the hotel instead. I’m probably making a bigger deal out of it than I should - they are perfectly competent. But I know I would hate to be driving something like that around the city.
Hid, I will get in touch with the options you sent. If anyone runs across anything else, please let me know.
And thanks for the well wishes. I’m totally fired up for this event, but verrrry nervous about the swim (my weakest event). But it’s all good.
Exactly how large is this thing? And how many nights are we talking? If it’s only one night or so, they just might get away with parking it at Marina Green, outside of the official parking. I’m not sure how sticky they will be about the no overnight parking there since all the Tri Cal trailers will be there (with security staying on-site). The guys are right…only the one RV place in SF which is pretty far away.
Thanks Cathy - that might be worth asking about. Honestly, I am probably exaggerating it - I think it’s one of those trailers that fits on the back of a pickup and pops out or something - not really sure. And it would definitely be 2 nights or less. I didn’t anticipate a whole lot of RV parks in the area, but thought it was worth asking folks familiar with the area - I’ll be focused on the event and not wanting to worry about their accommodations so hoping to plan it well in advance.
Thanks for all the help. Hope to meet some of you at the race!
Candlestick RV Park - San Francisco California
650 Gilman Avenue, San Francisco CA 94124
(Candlestick is not that close to the race, but if they wake up a few minutes eralier, it shoudl be a quick drive for them). http://www.sanfranciscorvpark.com/
RV Park of San Rafael - San Francisco California
1700 California Street, San Francisco CA 94109 (this is the other side of the GG Bridge - I just found the listing, so I can’t tell you much about it).
There is also a KOA in Petaluma which would be (at that hour) about a 45 minute drive.
Aside from that, they could consider trying to camp it along the beach (Great Highway maybe if it allows overnight stays); at Fort Mason which is right next to the race start/finish (again, if overnight is permitted) or if they don’t need to tap into water, electricity, sewer - find a quiet neighborhood street. I believe the race is a Sunday so time limits/permits on parking at most places is not enforced.
