I know there was a terrible accident at Alcatraz, with at least one person in very serious condition. But heard there may have been a death too?
Not true.
i saw one horrible wreck on the bike, dude looked seriously thrashed.

He is hospitalized in serious condition in the hospital with a head injury (amongst other pain). Expected to stay hospitalized for about a month.
Ok, that is good (about the death). I hope the head injury person recovers well…
what happened?
While descending, he hit a dip in the road that was in a shady spot so he didn’t see it. Went endo, got , got hit by another cyclist. 3rd went down trying to avoid.
bad bike wreck at the bottom of a hill. looked bad, but glad to hear he’s gonna make it.

Short version (and third-hand, so may not be totally correct–KEJ can chime in as she was at meeting too when Terry told us this): Guy lost control, went over handlebars, crashed. Gal behind also lost control, crashed. Guy #2 coming other direction (I think), tried to avoid gal and hit Guy #1.
Guy #1 is in serious condition, but vitals and other markers are good, so prognosis hopeful. His parents are here too from out of town and the RD and tri club found them temporary housing. All things look hopeful.
Guy #2 and gal went to hospital but were released.
Any good thoughts for Guy #1 appreciated. Cards/notes have been sent to him at SF General Hospital.

At the Broad Street 10 Miler two years ago, one of the Master Elite’s had a heart attack at Mile 1 and was being worked on as 22,00 people ran by…That was about as shocking a scene as I’ve ever seen. I asked the RD at an expo that fall what happened to the guy and he wound up being fine…

i hope he is ok. i’ll keep him in my thoughts.
Thanks for update. Keeping him in my prayers.
I heard…
that Lance Armstrong is going to do an Ironman
that Floyd Landis came in 20th in a mountain bike race last weekend
that Tom Cruise is gay (I don’t believe this one for a moment)
Is that really necessary?
wth? there is a man in the HOSPITAL. geez. read the thread.
I’m going to open up a can of worms, but it’s an honest question that I’d like to know.
Will the victims USAT insurance help with medical costs? I’d hope so, otherwise, what’s the point of it? Protect the race? Protect the injured?

I’m not sure of how any of it works. Here is the link to that part of the USAT website.

I love SF and I loved doing Alcatraz last year, but those were some of the roughest roads, pavement wise, that I have ever ridden on. I was going up one hill while the pros were descending and I do not see how they kept upright at the speed they were going. They bounced all over the place. I love fast descents, but I was riding the brakes going down some of those hills. I do not know if the rough road surface caused his wreck, but I am amazed there have not been more bad wrecks during that race.
Volunteers work very hard to make the race safe.
Ummmm it’s San Francisco. Ever driven a car on the streets there? Now take that width of four car tires on shoddy pavement and divide it by a huge margin and - voila! Welcome to San Francisco cycling. Same goes for sections of road at IMAZ and Vineman.
