Alarm Clocks

In an effort to avoid sleeping through early swim workouts I set my alarm clock on the far side of the bedroom so that I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I’m not sure this is a good idea. Going from dead asleep in a horizontal position to vertical and moving in a matter of seconds sometimes makes my stomach feel like it’s on an ocean voyage, not the sort of prep I want for a swim workout.

I’m now leaning toward the two alarm system: one by my bed with just some good music that I can snooze a few times, and one on the other side of the room that sounds like backing heavy machinery alerting me to the do-or-die status of my workout.

What do other people do?

PS: My thermometer shows 43*F at 10:17am. If you live in Florida, SoCal, etc, now would be the appropriate time of year to begin gloating.

I have a lot of experience with this. Last year I had to coach HS swimming while working full time, suffering quite a bit of sleep deprivation while I had that tumor creating pressure on my brain that caused my to be very tired and fatigued. I could never wake up on time and could sleep through anything once I was asleep.

I like your plan. The big thing is you have to get out of bed to really wake up and that is what that second alarm is for. I used to have a bunch of alarms all around my bed but would turn them all off and not remember a thing. But now I have it all figured out. It is evolved to the point that the first alarm is just a warning for the second and I don’t bother turning it off. The second one is soooo loud! It has to wake up the guy above me, (in the apartment above me, that is).

Early in my marriage I once told my wife that I HAD to be up on time and not let me go back to sleep and not to take any of my excuses. This was during a huge project at work and I was putting in ridiculous hours. Evidently, when she woke me up I convinced her that I didn’t need to be awake yet and that we had finished our work so I could sleep later, and all that crap about don’t take my excuses doesn’t count anymore. She let me sleep. I have no memory of talking her out of waking me up.

I keep thinking of Young Dr. Frankenstein when he goes into the monsters cell and tells the people outside, no matter what I say or what you hear or how pitifully I beg, don’t unlock the door.

Have three kids. One of mine is always up at 5:00.

Or, have a training partner that you know is waiting for you.

Go to bed earlier… ;).

I use my cellphone as an alarm - set to silent and on vibrate. That’s enough to wake me up (yet I’ll quite easily sleep through a thunder storm. Strange). Getting out of bed is a different story. That’s just me convincing myself that, yes, I really do want to get up and go swimming…

i have a hard time waking up in the dark. so i use a cheap version of the ‘sunrise alarm clock’.

i have a night light (i have a sponge bob square pants one, but you could use any kind) on a timer in the far corner of my room that turns on about 20mins before my alarm. that way my body is already starting to wake up before the damn buzzer goes off. plus i hate the sound of the buzzer so much i often wake up 2-3mins before it’s set to go off to avoid it.

i believe the weather cow said it was 4c when i woke up this morning :-\

Just use the old “Indian” alarm clock method. I heard indians did this before a fight with another trible so they wouldn’t over sleep.

Drink a whole lot of water and your bladder will be waking you and not letting you sleep in.
