After 25 years the AR finally goes!

that is pretty awesome for Webb, a very solid performance. Too bad there wasn’t more in the stands to witness it, I wish I had been there to see it. The real sad thing is now when I see Steve Scott running in the mornings I won’t be able to think to myself “there goes the guy who still holds the AR for the mile”
what’s really amazing is that without flocasts…we’d never see that footage!
wow that guy is really excited.
how far is that from the world record?

3 seconds…
3:43.13 set by Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.
8th fastest time in history. Not bad, and there’s more to come. One could argue the record would be faster if any athletes other than Americans cared about the mile distance.

Oh, many great British middle distance runners over the past 60 years may have a different view.

The only athletes with the potential to have lowered the record below the current 3:43 (i.e. Africans) don’t particularly care about the mile record. They usually save their best races for the 1500m or any other distance that’s contested at worlds and the olympics.
El G is the WR holder in the 1500 meters. He ran a few high quality miles. If you look at his mile vs 1500 record they are pretty equivalent as far as quality.

While that’s true, Webb currently has the world leader in the 1500m for the year as well…
Yeah, I know it’s done all the time, and the guy attempting the record still has to finish it off, the but am I the only one that’s bothered when these races are “set up” for records. I almost feel like there should be separate records for paced and non-paced efforts.
Not trying to take anything away from Webb. He’s obviously very talented and has had some great results - and he’s still improving at a rapid rate!
Darn, who is going to tell Sir Roger Bannister that he gets an asterisk next to his record? It was a paced sub-4 minute mile.

I’m very well aware of that fact.

Last lap solo…he’s overtaking his 1200 rabbit before he peels off, and then runs the last 400 or so on his own, no competition. I understand what you’re saying, but appreciate the effort and mental strength it takes to do what he did the last 1/4 to finish it off.
Well done!
Absolutely! No disrespect to Timmy at at all. I just don’t like the way they go about setting these records sometimes.
Understandable…though it was interesting to hear the commentary regarding why Webb was going for this record at a very small meet, making it sound as though some of the other major meets don’t or won’t run the mile, in favor of the 1500. So maybe there’s little choice when it comes to these things?
I love that Steve Scott supports the Cal Sate San Marcos track shirt in pretty much every interview that he does. Go Cougars!!!
Thanks for that link. That was great.
