Small plane down in river off New York Thu Jan 15, 2009 3:48pm EST -] Text +]
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A small plane carrying more than a dozen people splashed down in the frigid waters of the Hudson River off Manhattan on Thursday and survivors were seen standing on the wings awaiting rescue, Reuters witnesses said.
It was not clear what caused the plane to go down. It was floating on the surface of the fast-moving river and ferries were seen approaching to rescue passengers.

What an image! I’d assume some good work by the pilots too.
I work at 48th and 6th and from the corner windows of our floor we can see the helicopters and ferries…any reports if there were any deaths?
It’s an A320. Here’s the flight path: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AWE1549

One plane. CNN is reporting that the plane suffered a bird strike on takeoff. This flight plan shows the plane was trying to return to LGA. CNN will catch up at some point.
150 people on board. They don’t know how many people survived but some people were seen in rescue boats. About half submerged. Hypothermia is probably the biggest risk.
Pilot said something about hitting 2 geese. They were only about 3500’ up and apparently the pilot brought it in for a landing in an intentional manner, not nose down or anything.
Word is that everyone got out safely. Word also is that the airplane might have hit a flock of birds, and lost both engines. It’s apparent that the pilot brought the airplane down in the river deliberately, and pretty darned well, too.

I should say so.
I think the flight attendants probably deserve a bunch of credit too. My guess is that some of the passengers are alive as a credit to them as well. They are not there to only serve coffee.

Pretty darned orderly, I dare say (yes, those are the passengers standing on the wings). Good thing that there are plenty of ferries all over the place to handle 150 new passengers. Another view showed about 3-4 more ferries waiting around.
WOW.
I know that this is only January 15 and all, but this could be the story of the year.

Obama’s first action in office. Listing geese as terrorist!
Glad reports so far show everyone safe. Let’s hope it stays that way. Kudos to the pilot!
Wow is right, what are the odds: double bird impact knocks out the engines over one of the most populated cities and a fully loaded plane is able to land on the Hudson with no break up or injuries on the plane or ground. Stunning.
Someone somewhere HAD to get video of that. Had to be pretty awesome looking with a water landing like that.

That pilot is a hero. Wow.
