Airline charges for flying with bikes

I’m looking at doing some cycling in Europe this summer. I’m flying from Vancouver to Glasgow, Scotland. I’ll probably be flying back from Madrid, Spain to Vancouver. It looks like there is a decent price with Air Canada. When I read the website about flying with bikes it seems to me that it should only cost and additonal $50 each way as long as I only check one other bag (which shouldn’t be a problem if i’m going to have to carry all of the stuff on the bike). But it almost seems too good to be true considering all the horror stories out there about outlandish charges when flying with bikes.
Does anyone have experience flying International with Air Canada with a bike?
Any better options or tips?

Air Canada has been better than most other airlines out there. You can even check in your bike beforehand when you check in online. Take that printout with you and you shouldn’t have any difficulties with their agents. Just make sure that the fully loaded bike box doesn’t weigh more than 50 pounds otherwise they will charge you more.

Domestically, Westjet has allowed me to fly for free with my bike on more than one occasion simply because it was packed properly in a bike box.
