Is anyone else going through a behavior change where you are more impatient, less tolerant of others, almost just being a big-time jerk in the Final Prep phase for IM? I’m almost to the taper for IMMoo and I’m being a jackass at home, pushy at work, and just all-around being agressive a lot of the time. I know I need to change, because I don’t like who I’ve become, and I don’t want an iron-divorce, but I just can’t seem to get a grip on this.
PIMS, Pre-Ironman Syndrome. Trust me, I don’t know if we should use the term “normal”, but it definatley is not unusual.
About 3-4 weeks pre IM my husband becomes possessed by a spirit my daughter named “Crabby Man”. Suddenly, no matter what I do, I find myself in his way. I also become quite annoying, demanding and talk too much.
The payoff is, a week before, usually on the plane to the race, he suddenly is exorcised and turns unto “Mr Nice Guy”. About this time I say “who are you and what are you doing in my husband’s body”.
If your wife doesn’t understand, tell her its like PMS. She will “get” it.

Maybe he just becomes “Honesty Man”… Can’t really relate to changes (I’m probably a jerk ALL the time), but it may be because I really don’t train much compared to many here, and the swings are probably more subtle.
Ps. Note to self, don’t cut anyone with a USAT sticker off in traffic…
If you catch yourself getting snappy, stop and take a deep breath. You signed up for this, right? It’s pretty normal to get crabby in the midst of a big training period after months of knocking it out. Try and get your ZZZzs and good nutrition, that will help.
That’s why I like his triples. Only one peak build week for 3 races, and lots of taper between. Plus I do get to travel a lot and I make him carry the luggage. I have ways to get my payback, but don’t tell Joe.
Funny you should mention that. I don’t know if I’m “crabby”, etc. But honestly I was thinking about this - and I told my wife I thought it was due to the fact that I’ve been spending so much time alone training, that I’m getting used to the “alone” time and am less tolerant of people needing things from me. When you’re used to spending an entire Saturday morning training until lunch time, or later, giving 5-minutes to someone you love just gets in the way. Sad, but it feels true lately. I’m looking forward to meeting the new lazy and laid-back NamssoB after IMMoo…
